I picked up an engine stand from my local Harbor Freight for 30 bucks, a piece of 1x1 square tubing for 8 bucks, 5 minutes with a welder and presto. I have an outdrive stand that is fully adjustable for different drives. I was just sick of having my drive standing in the corner and wanted something t put it on...

Very nice.

You need to make another modification to it to make it have adjustable height so you can just slide it under the cavitation plate when you are removing the drive off the boat.

Re: DIY El-Cheapo Outdrive Stand

I was going to do that and use a trailer jack to make it move up and down but I couldnt find tubing that would slide over the main vertical tube. I could put new square tubing on with the tongue jack concealed in the center of the tube but I didnt feel like a full on project today. I just wanted something simple to get my drive off the floor...

I suggest putting some padding on the 1" tubes so you don't scratch the paint on the outdrive. Pipe insulation from your local building supply store would probably fit perfectly.

Thanks a ton! I've actually thought about how to do this and didn't come up with a good idea right off the bat. I've got a couple of engine stands around..

how about using u tube instead of square tubing so you could slide the fin into the channel and be able to turn it sideways or upside down while working on things?

I took care of that yesterday with some adhesive backed foam on the top and inside of the rails.

I was thinking of that also. I was going to weld another piece of tubing on the top spaced just enough to allow the plate to slide between them and would allow one to be able to turn it to any position. Like I said this was a quick fix. If you come up with something better let me know. I still have to other to stand-offs left to weld to, and sure do enjoy building things. That's one of the cools things working with metal. You can always add more if you need to...

OMG- That was a stroke of genious.

I farted around making a wooden one atop a moving dolly. LOL

I have several engine stands kicking around my shop, and it never even occured to me.

(I say under my breath, muttering and grumbling) I even already converted one to hold a V Twin engine, gas, oil and electrical components for test running.

Great Job!

Weld some angle to the tube so it goes over the "plate".
Could even use angle with slotted holes and bolted to the tubes so it could provide clamping action. Hmmm, I've got a bajillion of those......
I love the design, and I too have one of those stands as a back up and I think it just got re-purposed.

Would make it a lot stronger if you put some triangulation above and below where you welded it on. Would hate to see those welds fail and the O/D fall off.

It would but I was putting all my weight on those tubes (250lbs) to test out the strength before I set the outdrive on and they held me just fine...

I think it's a great idea and if it were in fact hight adjustable that would be the only thing I'd change and or add.

Re: DIY El-Cheapo Outdrive Stand

Like I said I was going to make one like this using a tongue jack, but I couldnt find a tube with the ID or OD that would slide down the stock vertical tube of the engine stand. When I put the outdrive back on the boat I will be putting a new tube on to allow for height adjustment.

This is from an i-boater posted awhile ago but I forget who...

Thinking of using something like this, but they are a little pricey...

Love that stand, and, the price you paid for it at Harbor Freight. Couldn't find it on their website. Would you mind passing along who makes it and a model #? Thanks.

Here is the stand I made using the trailer jack from Harbor Freight.

I can unbolt the arms and the jack so that you can store it in a flat area.
