I have an older boat which has twin engine.

To make thing less complicated for me to explain i will explain if i only had one engine..

My engine has a Newer Style Fuel Filter/Water Separator set-up

but i also have the original Fuel Filter which is attached to the Fuel pump which is mounted to the corner of the engine..

its weird to explain but here is how its set up.. Look below i got a Tree of how its set-up

--ENGINE
-----Fuel PUMP "connects to
--------Fuel Filter "connects to"
-----------Fuel Filter/Water Separator

Can i just remove the First "Fuel Filter" and connect it directly to the Fuel Filter/Water Separator???

Re: Do i need TWO Fuel Filter

To add to this, my twin engine set up specifically describes the fuel system with a single fuel/water separator for each engine and goes on to advised NOT to add anything else. The fuel system has been designed to operate under a specific pressure and flow and adding additional items may negatively upset that.

Not to say that is how your may be...just food for thought.

Ok thats great..

So this is my Plan..

I will remove Both original Fuel Filter, and connect each engine to its OWN Fuel/Water Separator..

Ok, we seem to have 2 different thoughts here.

If one has a fuel pump with a filter on it AND adds a Water Separating Filter
should the fuel pump filter be used as well?

Why Does it need 1 Engine Need 2 Fuel Filter?

i think 1 should be enough to filter the Fuel. plus i think pressure come into play later on when it comes to proper operational engine

Actually 3 is very common. (Factory) 88 Sea Ray
First one mounted close to the tank, water/fuel seperator, and the one in the carb inlet.

Re: Do i need TWO Fuel Filter

With todays fuels each engine needs 1 water seperating fuel filter of 10 micron filtration. I don't care if it's a 3.0L or and 8.1L. It needs 1. That little filter in the carb and/or the fuel pump, is a screen that collects big rocks, nothing to stop water or finer material that the water seperating fuel filter will get.
The water seperating fuel filter needs changed at least once a year. Not just changed, but inspected. Dump it out into a clear container and see what you have. If a tablespoon of water, that is about the max for normal. More than that and you need to get the water out of the tank. not change all the fuel, just get the water out.

Honestly on my fuel line I have an in line filter first in line under my deck, then a small filter connected toAT the inlet of my electric fuel pump, then my water seperator, then a fuel pressure regulator, next a see through filter to visually check, then a fuel pressure gauge. Mine runs fine and keeps the pressure up no matter what. If your worried about it buy a fuel pressuer regulator and gauge. trust me it puts your mind at ease. you can get a adjustable regulator for around $20 - $30 and a gauge for like fifteen at autozone.

Yes, you may have that, but it's all dangerous, not needed, and mostly against CG regulations. I sure wouldn't be suggesting that setup to anyone.

Is it ok to remove the fuel pump filter entirely if I have a water separating filter before it, or just leave it there?

Reason I ask is mine is dirty and was wondering if I even need to replace it.

Realistically... yes you can get rid of them.
