Sorry bout that, I better get in the habit of using the correct terms. My wife is still trying to figure out port and starboard and fore and aft.

What's the diff between a deck and a sole? Are there a list of correct nautical terms so I can avoid looking like a total dork? I need all the help I can get.

I'm fairly new to ownership but spent a lot of tome in my uncles 19 ft Grady White he bought new in 76 and stored in a barn and very well maintained(when he sold it for a thousand dollars in 2002, he swore he never had the 115 johnson over 2300 rpm and probably true) and decks appeared to be as sound as the day it was bought.

It depends on what you mean by "old boat". pre-mid 70s is old to me.

In Michigan there are a lot of people around here with old boats and I bet all are rotted.

it depends on the care the boat has received. My friend's parents recently bought an '87 Capri 1952 in original condition and it looks like new inside and out. Few hundred hours on it. No rotten floors or stringers in that vessel.

My Bayliner was left outside, uncovered, over winter, with the bilge plug still in. I know because they told me

I know where two or three rotten (I'm sure) boats are now. One is only about three miles from my house. They have been outside and uncovered for years.Yea, old boats are from the 60's and early 70's.

Too bad they don't build boats like my 1964 MFG Westfield. The only thing I had to replace when my Grandfather gave it to me were the seats because the plywood in them rotted (I now wish I had kept them and replaced the wood and had them re-upholstered).

bottom line is if there is wood in a boat, It WILL rot, and if it is an old boat, the question is when was the last time the wood was replaced. Because it has to be replaced prob every 10 years or so.

My 19' 1965 Owens has a rock solid deck. The original owner of 40 years had it lifted in a boat house when not in use, and the second owner had it in his pole barn for 2 years. Now its in my garage with its original 3/4" plywood deck. It came new with vinyl floors, but have had carpet for at least the last 20 years whick was just replaced.

most boat owners do not take care of boats that well.
so like TD says, look around and look for signs of how well the owner takes care of it. See how organized he is, and how clean his truck is, and such.

displacement hulls or trawlers do. planing hulls need to be light to function properly ie no keel.

my hull has a slight dip where the Keel is, a cavity that you could fill up with a few inches of lead, but i guess that would hurt planing a lot.

It HAS to be replaced every ten years or so????
My 31 year old deck is in solid shape. Not everyone treats their boats with disrespect, like all the ones you see in back yards, uncovered, and full of crap.

Mine was treated well for 31 years by the first owner, and will be treated right by me.

I am in Zilwaukee. Haven't been where you are at. The Batboat is gutted out and I won't be able to resume the work on it until late June. I don't have a garage.

OK I couldnt answer honestly due to the fact I have 2 boats . The 74 larson 1700 Shark has aluminum plate for floors . The original owner redid the floors/stringers before I got it and he put an aluminum Deck in it so I donbt think the deck in that one will ever ever rot . The 64 Crestliner on the other hand will end up needing new stringers and deck as I restore it although as far as I can tell the transom is solid as a rock .

Nice Boat EZ, just bought a lawn ornament Bass Tracker Pro16 for $500 with a 35 horse, hope the motor will wake up, and yes the deck needs replaced. It has been collecting leaves for about 8 years. There were actually small saplings growing on the deck.
I plan on using the old deck as a template to replace it. I figured the trailer and aluminum hull are worth the $500, it also had a replacement prop (new) so If I have to sell it piece meal if it doesn't work out I should be able to recover my investment.

The definition of a cockpit is a recessed area in a sailboats deck where the helm or tiller are controlled from. Traditionally speaking, power boats don't have cockpits. That's what I have learned from extensive research on nautical and boat terms and definitions. Although some power boat manufacturers may refer to the general area of control as the cockpit, this is not universal.

No, I have not come across the term "cockpit sole" until I just did a yahoo search on it. And as the name implies, its a sailboat cockpit floor. Did a little poking around, and it seems to be limited to sail boats.

I wish where was a power boat terms and directory of parts like I have found with sailboats. Seems that power boat part names are just carryover from sailboats, and that is not always the best.

So you have never seen a listing for a boat refered to as a CPMY or cockpit motor yacht?
