Re: Do red hooks work better???
Uhh, there's nothing wrong with researching things... ESPECIALLY fishing. Research is probably the single biggest determining factor on how successful you will be. You should have seen me doing research before my trip to the keys. I even put together a book with all kinds of different fish, pictures of each, their habitat, foods, times of spawn, etc, all kinds of stuff. I took it with me, and it really helped put us on the fish we wanted. I ended up leaving it on the rental boat, but Jerry's over in Marathon where I rented from called and asked if I wanted it mailed to me... I said no since we weren't going to get to go back down for several more years, and they asked me if they could keep it and use it because so many of their customers ask them about that stuff. As far as I know they are still using it.
By the way to answer the question, YES, red hooks do make a difference with SOME fish in some conditions. If you are fishing in clear water they will make a bigger difference than in murky water. They for sure will help trigger strikes that you wouldn't otherwise get from some fish like bass.
What isn't for sure, is why. Some people have theorized that it looks like blood, however a study of deep sea biology could lead someone to believe that it may have more to do with the fish being less apt to see the red spectrum and thus less likely to notice the hook 'til it's too late.
