Uhh, there's nothing wrong with researching things... ESPECIALLY fishing. Research is probably the single biggest determining factor on how successful you will be. You should have seen me doing research before my trip to the keys. I even put together a book with all kinds of different fish, pictures of each, their habitat, foods, times of spawn, etc, all kinds of stuff. I took it with me, and it really helped put us on the fish we wanted. I ended up leaving it on the rental boat, but Jerry's over in Marathon where I rented from called and asked if I wanted it mailed to me... I said no since we weren't going to get to go back down for several more years, and they asked me if they could keep it and use it because so many of their customers ask them about that stuff. As far as I know they are still using it.

By the way to answer the question, YES, red hooks do make a difference with SOME fish in some conditions. If you are fishing in clear water they will make a bigger difference than in murky water. They for sure will help trigger strikes that you wouldn't otherwise get from some fish like bass.

What isn't for sure, is why. Some people have theorized that it looks like blood, however a study of deep sea biology could lead someone to believe that it may have more to do with the fish being less apt to see the red spectrum and thus less likely to notice the hook 'til it's too late.

The reason why red hooks work better (and they do!!!!) is that red is the first color in the spectrum to become invisible under water. The reason why chartreuse bait is so effective is because this type of green is the deepest visible under water.

the literature with my Cajun Wire states you begin to lose the red spectrum after 6' deep .

Why not take both along and do the experiment. A few years ago in a local Sockeye Salmon fishery the reds were outdoing the plain hooks, but then we were generally using a red type of bait to imitate plankton. The most bizzare thing is a year later the hottest rig was 2 bare black hooks with nothing on them. Within days you could not find a black hook anywhere in town, I was lucky to beg a few from someone going home.

I agree that read is the first to disappear but the red hooks I have used I think work better because they are a light wire that allows the bait to sink more natural due to the lighter weight.

I have found that red hooks work great in saltwater , if you want to catch one catfish after the another.:eek: Here in southwest Florida I have more luck with a small black hook.

Re: Do red hooks work better???

Hi, new guy here. I also fish a lot, Hope to meet some new friends
My two cents:
I agree with red in the spectrum theory. I don't use cajun with conventional equip just cuz I don't like the line.
I did an experiment on a good fishing day with striper schoolies. I purposely tied the same type of fly with white thread and red. When they were hitting hard with the red, I went to the white. I saw no impressive difference. They were still hitting hard and often. On THAT day. (I wish every day lol)
But that day presentation and movement could have been key, not color. As the water was pretty clear. Which brings to mind the water clarity could make a difference with these red "parts"
Also I saw a notice of a state record striper the other day on the web. (can't rememebr which state) They showed the lure, it looked like a classic white and red rebel type style swimmer.......It had those red hooks. lol

Re: Do red hooks work better???

I think there could be an advantage to red hook, especially in clear and shallow water. If you do deeper in the water than 5 feet or so, the color red dissapears from the spectrum and what you see is black. Red line and hooks dont dissapear underwater, they just turn black.
I've got plenty of red hooks and black hooks. I like to try everything, but I dont really have more confidence in the red hooks. For every rule in fishng, there is an exception.

Re: Do red hooks work better???

i only fish in shallow water,,,,

but ive got a little bathroom book........

it says .....the color of water you fish in makes a difference....
the color of lure you use makes a difference ...(depending on the depth and color of the water)

different fish like different colors....

different colors work differently depending on the sky...(overcast...clear...hazy)

he has charts that tell you what fish......what color water...sky...depth............= lure color

imho...you need a computer to figger it out!!!!

however....the author claims big results

he has pics showing what lures look like under water at what depth at what type of sunlight.......really confusing...but sounds good.

as for the red blood thing......he doesnt draw that paralell.

and thats the great thing about i boats forum......we can all learn from each other. without fear of ridicule.......

CBAC !!! man dont be so ****ty to people asking questions! If you know it all then dont come to the forum! It is here as a winter pass time for us to spend the time we usually use fishing. You dont have to be such an *** to someone asking a question!!

I agree with drewmitch44 he has a point but back to the real question i have had good luck with silver and metalic leurs. I think that the fish seee the shine and are interested and come over to see what it is and take a nibble if you are lucky but it all depends on the fish. Good luck.

Wise words Gmonkey!

Colours are lost with depth in the following order; red orange yellow green blue indigo violet. A memory aid from my diving days was ROY G. BIV
