The current MAGNETIC north, which moves around more than you think, is in Greenland.
While the magnetic north pole is far from the geographic north pole, it's a LOT farther from Greenland.

A compass and charts (and knowing how to use them) are invaluable backups if you boat anywhere you could be out of sight of land, IMO.

I guess what we really need are people to teach us how to use a compass correctly. I really would love to learn to use a compass and charts.
Hi Bugs, Usually your local Power Squadron runs all kinds of courses including basic navigation by compass. I don't know where you are, but the attached website might get you started. I've taken the Canadian Power Squadron course a couple of times and can attest that it's really worthwhile.
