A compass and charts (and knowing how to use them) are invaluable backups if you boat anywhere you could be out of sight of land, IMO.
While the magnetic north pole is far from the geographic north pole, it's a LOT farther from Greenland.The current MAGNETIC north, which moves around more than you think, is in Greenland.
