Rain dosen't bother me, it's the lightning that keeps me ashore.

I carry a portable AM radio and tune to a place on the band that is clear. When I hear crackling, I know that lightning is around. I do this when I see clouds gathering on the horizon. If so, I head in.

Yep! Here in Fl we're in the "rainny season" and it always rains almost every day. I carry my curtains and rain gear. It's only water!

Yeah. Change the question to do you go out with a 30% chance of a full "moon". :)

Re: Do you go ou with a 30% chance of rain?

You read the footnote cited right after that paragraph, right? There are three definitions and different people use different ones. Not to get too far OT, but much of the confusion is in the probability itself (scientific vs. non-scientific)(subjective probabilities)...it's not as cut and dry as most people think. Here's more...

I believe your first post is still wrong. Here is what I found:

NOAA defines as:

"Precipitation Probabilities (PoP): It is defined as the likelihood of occurrence (expressed as a percent) of a measurable amount of liquid precipitation (or the water equivalent of frozen precipitation) during a specified period of time at any given point in the forecast area. Measurable precipitation is defined as equal to or greater than .01 inch or .2 mm. Normally, the period of time is 12 hours, unless specified otherwise. The forecast area, or zone, is generally considered to be a county. In some geographically unique areas (mountains), the forecast area/zone may consist of portions of a county or two counties. At times, some NWS forecasters will use occasional or periods of to describe a precipitation event that has a high probability of occurrence, i.e., they expect any given location in a forecast zone area to most likely have precipitation, but it will be of an on and off nature. Usually, away from the mountains, each and every county is a forecast zone area itself."

sure i do.Why not,it is not a guarantee of rain and I don't go out that far in the ocean because my boat is not that big.So if anything happens I put up my bimini top and just quickly get back to the pier.30% usually doesn't mean that much.

Yeah, I've seen BoatinFool's profile pic several times, and just now noticed there's a boat in the pic :D

...and as many others have said, if we didn't go out with 30% chance of rain around here we never would. Last couple weeks we've been hammered with thunderstoms almost every day. Something about the gulf stream duking it out with an arctic air flow right above se michigan, so lots of rain and high winds are supposed to last thru the end of July. Yay.

Lightening is about the only thing I worry about when fishing. Rain is why I have rain gear, and wind is why I know how to run my boat in high winds, and why I have a lot of trolling motor on the bow.

Re: Do you go ou with a 30% chance of rain?

Since all I have to do is untie from the mooring and go, a 30% chance wouldnt necessarily stop me. Afterall, dropping barometer is better for fishing fresh water. If it rains, I get a little wet and still only have to travel a mile or so to get back, tie up, get to the porch and life is again good. Except for the bailing when it's done....

As Jay says, if we didn't go out with a 30% chance of rain we wouldn't use our boats from February to November down here. New Orleans rain chance forecast for next 10 days:

6/25 50%
6/26 60%
6/27 50%
6/28 40%
6/29 60%
6/30 40%
7/1 40%
7/2 30%
7/3 60%
7/4 60%

Sorry, I can't understand these percentages you are quoting here? Could you enlarge your avatar to help me make sense of them :D

Went out today with a 30-50% chance depending on where you checked, and we didn't see one drop. :D

Great day on the water.

Re: Do you go ou with a 30% chance of rain?

We usually have a chance for Thunderstorms. Rarely have just rainy days in the summer. I keep a look out for thunderhead clouds and make sure there are none blocking my exit. I keep the weather radio going and listen for watches and warnings and which way storms are heading. I learned my lesson one time by not heading warnings. The warnings were not for my area at the time. Good bet if the weather guesser warnings go off all around you then you are going to get it too. We got trapped by a nasty storm and it wasn't fun at all.
Ya, I go out at 30% or more. Just keep my eye on the sky and listen to that weather radio

Re: Do you go ou with a 30% chance of rain?

I went out yesterday with a 30% chance of rain...and it rained!

Got the week off. Weather report sounded like rain wouldn't come until like 6pm. I thought the lake would be nice and empty of boaters on a Monday after the July 4th weekend. didn't look bad at all in the parking lot.

So I had fun on the lake for hours! I ran around at WOT and generally had a blast. Then I started to do some fishing, my real reason for the day, but dark purple clouds showed up on the horizon...I kept an eye on the weather all day and mostly it was cloudy but didn't look bad, but these clouds looked like lightning, so I started cruising back to the public docks.

That's when I found out what a rush at the docks is like! Weren't that many people on the water, but we were all trying to trailer our boats at the same time.

The wind really kicked up, which was kind of scary, because 3 weeks ago we got hit with a bad storm thaat knocked down a lot of trees. Rain was coming down pretty hard. It was the knarliest trailering i've done so far, but I did it!

Fun day! Will go out agian with a 30% chance of rain. I like those odds. :)

fun aint it...;) i miss judged a storm a few years ago on the missouri river.... got torrentialy rained on and was 7th in line at the ramp. at least i had my soft top up so was mostly dry, compared to the rest of the folks w/o. man they was soggy doggys for sure.... was real fun holding it against the current of the missouri for who knows how long too... like you. i had a real knarly load that day.... but it was on the trailer and i was outta there so the next guy could give it a try....... boating sure is fun.....:D

from the looks of the poll. us boaters look like we enjoy a little excitement in our day and 30% chance don't chase us off too easy.....

Re: Do you go ou with a 30% chance of rain?

Yup, I go out in 30% chance. Most of the time we see no rain. Have had to out-run a storm or two but can either get back to the ramp in time of hide under a bridge until it passes. Now that my bay boat is gone and I'm back to a 12 foot aluminum boat...last time it rained hard and I had to take cover from the rain, I eased the boat between the two hulls of a huge sailing catamaran that was tied up at a residential dock. I had to practically lay down in the boat but stayed dry until the rain passed!
