I was wondering how many people actually run your motor on muffs?
I threw a rod my Johnson 112 while it was on the muffs. I had it rebuilt and it was tested on the water by the shop.
I was really wondering how many people actually use muffs?

I do.

Just watch the rpm's. Not over 2K or so. Much easier to track down an issue in the driveway.

Absolutely, I run them on the muffs a lot. Like tacklewasher said, you don't want to rev them up too much, especially outboards, they can run away on you.

I run my motors on muffs, but I don't like to. Muffs are just more convenient than messing with filling up a barrel of water and then siphoning out the water to move it.

I have for years and don't pay attention to the rpm's. I start them at idle speed and check things out. Then I put them in F gear and goose em a few times....rmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm up to 4500 or so and back to idle, rmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm and so on.

Do it 3 or 4 times, let it idle to cool off and quit. total time on muffs about 2-3 minutes.

Oh and I run Mercs, 3,4, and 6 bangers.

I use mine quite often. Never above 1500 rpm or so.

Had a neighbor down the street this summer who must have been running his inline 6 at 6000 . It was just screaming and he was at it for over and hour, starting idling revving etc.

Kept waiting for the BANG but it didn't happen

I run my outboard on muffs in the driveway before each trip. Better to find out it won't start in the driveway than on the ramp holding up traffic:eek:

Doesn't sound like a good idea. Revs on the muffs are not under load, and the drivetrain can get over-revved.

Remember, doing dumb things doesn't guarantee anything, so some get away with it, but it sure increases the chances of something bad happening.

Someone tells me that they blew a rod on the muffs and I have to ponder... did they rev it up just a bit too much?

Re: Do you run your motor on muffs at the house?

not have used muffs, but use them at least once every week during the season.

i always warm up my engine prior to going to the lake.
i always flush after i come home from the lake.
i do a tune up on the muffs, dwell and timing
i warm up my oil for an oil change on the muffs

i wore out my 1st set of muffs last year. they lasted 5 years + or -.

only indecent i've had was when the gf started the washer once while i was on the muffs. low water pressure got me. a minor overheat. so gotta keep an eye on the gf..... ;)

can't remember going over 1500 rpms. generally idle - 1200.....

from what i understand. revving the engine on the muffs proves nothing + can be damaging to the engine.

I like to do this, but I often head out early and the neighbors get grumpy if I fire it up at 5 in the morning. And, this time of year my outside water is turned off.

I'll run it on muffs in the spring to burn off fogging oil.
Or after any other procedure like changing fuel filters, plugs or whatever to make sure everything is OK.
Never feel the need to run it in the driveway before each outing just to make sure it will start. If my boat were that unreliable it would be repaired or replaced. Being out on the water in something you wonder if it will start when you turn the key has to be no fun at all.

I run in salt water so I always flush back at the house. Also, I usually do a brief run in the driveway before heading to the coast just to make sure everything is OK. It kinda steams my clams when people wait until they get to the ramp to determine if their engine is going to start or not. (If it was hard to start the last time then I'm pretty sure it didn't get any better just sitting in the garage.)

Pretty much my thoughts-
I also use them when i'm just tinkering around the boat & just want to run it a few minutes

In salt water I flush my I/O every time... almost daily, on the lift, in the winter in FL. Always at idle.
Have never flushed in fresh water.

I run it on muffs after each ocean launch for a few minutes and then the last bit with salt away.

I ran my Merc 175 all the time on muffs. Never worried one bit about it.

The Ocean Pro has a flushing port so I just hook up the hose and run it that way.

Yep. I run all sorts of outboards on muffs in my yard.

The bigger ones I fill up plastic tub with water and just submerge the prop (with the muffs still on). This cuts down on the noise factor and keeps my neighbors from killing me.

I think this is a good idea. I did it for the first time a few months ago and that was when I realized that I blew my VRO pump. Glad I found out then and not at the ramp.

Re: Do you run your motor on muffs at the house?

Usually only in the fall during winterizing to warm up the oil, fog the motor etc. Don't do more than 2000 rpm and am real careful to make sure the hose doesn't collapse or otherwise restrict flow.

This is a neat idea. However, my neighbour was building a new place next door all summer so I'm not too worried about my motor disturbing his frame nailing, tree cutting, and backhoe activities...:D
