Yes. Lower RPM in the fall to "fog" the MERC 90 O.B.

I prefer the big bucket technique, (and its a little quieter) BUT I do use the muffs when Im just checking something out, quick adjustments (3.0 mercruiser i/o)
will occasionally rev to 2000 or less for whatever reason

I threw a rod my Johnson 112 while it was on the muffs.

Ayuh,... I use the muffs All the time...

I'd love to hear the Story that explains that quote though...

I run the motor on muffs after every outing to flush the motor.

For the record: Muffs yes. Revs on the muffs? NO.

:)

If you don't understand what 'load' is on an engine, then you won't understand why revs on the muffs do nothing except increase the chance for harm. Muffs to flush... muffs to warm... muffs to test starting... but muffs for revs? No way.

Actually, a number of people will buy a boat and hear it run and rev on the muffs and walk away thinking this proves enough about the engine, then they take it out on the water AFTER buying it and it won't run right under load.

If you know what you are doing, light revs are ok, but since they don't really accomplish much of anything, why bother?

Every time for me too before going to the lake. I let it idle for about 10 minutes to be sure everything is running good then head out to the water.

Re: Do you run your motor on muffs at the house?

I bought this boat in June this summer, and my muffs from my last vessesl were ruined (looksl ike the squirrels chewed the rubber while it sat on a shelf in garage) ... but since I had a lot of confidence in my boat, I always launched and started. It was not a good "cold starter" but always ran like a champ once started. Near end of season - she sat for 3 weeks unused. When I finally launched her, and 3 minutes of cranking, she never fired once. Had to retrieve then charge it at home. A lot of wasted effort (trailer, unbutton cover, untie, load, launch .... crank.... then retrieve... trailer home)

After charging - I got some new muffs, and fired it at home before next use...

I had a full tune up before she was winterized, mechanic said 2 of the plugs had a bad gap... and there was blockage in the carb. Now the bulb gets hard when pumped, and new plugs to put in for spring.... he said it should run fantastic...

But... you can bet I'm gonna fire it in my drive with muffs every time now to save the headaches just in case she don't fire.

Yes I want to make sure that if there is any problem with the motor I find it before launching the boat.

I use muffs as well but if I want to run my outboard for any length of time I use a box that I built and fill it up with water. Not because I'm afraid to use muffs but to try and being a considerate neighbour. Wouldn't want to make anyone cranky. :)

After every outing (saltwater) with my 25Merc - I just let it idle until the **** stream goes from nasty whitish to clear.

Re: Do you run your motor on muffs at the house?

yep, I use them when troubleshooting and winterizing. The Rinker is in the water most of the year but every spring I fire it on the muffs before it leaves the stands. I've had it not start in the spring from some various issues and I'd be really annoyed to discover that it wasn't going to run after it was already in the water. Just keep the RPM down and you're good. Same rule applies with cars, you don't gun the engine in neutral.

Even in the lake, can I assume one would not want to rev (in neutral) much higher than about 2000 rpm?

Yup. No reason to either. Except if one feels the need to break something and then spend some quality time fixing it....
