Seeing as I usually have the smallest boat on the bay, no one feels intimidated by my presence, and they almost always wave. I often get the comment "What a cute boat!" when out in the MFG. It brings a smile to peoples face, so they wave. When I see people pointing at us, you can almost guarantee that they are saying "My Dad used to have a boat like that one! ".

Re: Do you wave at passing boats? a lost art

This thread makes me think of this last weekend and wander if anyone really knows. My family and I were aut boating the kids were tubing and I had plenty of gas but for some reason the motor started messing up and wouldnt speed up. I am thinking was some bad gas or something but anyway I was messing around with the carbs trying to get it to take the throttle and it was sucking the fuel level down fast. We were waving arms jumping up and down and a few people passed us and waved back finally one boat turned around and towed us back but they thought we were just waving at first LOL. I am very glad they saw us and came back. Any way I refuelled and the motor is working fine just not sure what was up yesterday. :D

LoL we get some of that here in Indiana also. They go upstream and shut off engine and float back downstream while dancing topless. Gotta luv the river .

I usually wave and get them back in return. The ones that don't return a wave dosen't really bother me. I consider it their problem or that they have a problem that I rather not know about.

Around here waving is generally limited to those that you know or a fellow "brand" owner.

Quite often an unsolicited wave to unknown individuals is taken as an incursion into their privacy. You either get no response or you get an evil stare and the kids are rounded up and sheltered by the adults onboard.

It?s a shame that it?s gotten to this point, but a reality none the less.

Agreed.
I have been boating since I was a 4 0r 5 yr old and have always waved and 95% get a positive responce. Last evening close to sunset wife & I are headed in and see a nice 28ft baja bobing up & down too close the rocky bank with 2 guys in the water trying to keep her of the rocks and others doing the both arms over the head wave. I slowed and started thier way but another boat closer saw them and got thier first to give them a tow. at 1st though i thought they were just waving.
In Texas it is the law to aid /assist anyone on the water in distress. anyways most everybody waves. just an acknowledgement that every thing is cool .I cannot tell you how many fools I have asked if they know what the NO WAKE buoy mean!
Note: girls waving thier bikini tops always get my attention:cool:

I wave at everybody.

If I see someone out there doing the same thing I'm doing (towing kids on a tube or whatever) they get an extra free bonus wave!

Anyway, I agree with the OP, it's sort of an unwritten signal, (like letting someone go ahead at a 4 way stop).

"Hey, See me?"
"Yep, I noticed. You're the old fat guy in that boat. Carry on..."
"I'm passing over here, Ok with you?"
"Yep, Pass on as you were. Carry on..."
"My wake won't upset you?"
"As if... Carry on..."
"Ain't this boating-thing cool?"
"Yep, cool. Carry on... But..."
"What do you think about Obama's new tobacco legislation?"
"Get your hand back on the wheel, NOOB, your fat kid fell off the tube, and I think I see a shark"

See? A whole conversation in 2 seconds.
I'm making lotsa new boating friends!

agreed, plus mine has "Sea Monkey" painted on it. :D Not real menacing....

BTW, I wave all the time. 99% of the time they wave back.

Sadly, too many young or new boaters these days don't know the difference between a "hello, good to see ya" wave, and the universal "I need assistance please" arms over the head wave.

I forgot to mention earlier, I even wave at the people on shore. They usually wave back more often than other boaters.

Perhaps that is the reason why "waving one's hand over their head" is not a USGC approved visual distress signal.

Perhap some education for the arm waviers ?

I'm not sure I would call it art or loss. I'm young and wave all the time.
