Impossible! Is it a 2stroke or 4stroke?

Fix it.
Or get a paddle for everyone on board.
Simple issue really, using a motor with problems means one of two things can happen.

1. Works fine for you all day long on the lake

or

2. You paddle back to the ramp.

ps Iboats sells paddles and parts you decide.

Worst case, if it is leaking oil, it could be pumping air, leaning out the bottom cylinder.

You cant use it cause it will polute the water. Our clean lakes dont need that kind of avoidable polution. This alone is enough reason. thanks

You asked -- so here's the answer: "Pay me now or pay me a lot more later!" How much more? A bunch! How much later? Who knows! When you were asked what made you feel the seal was leaking, that question was politely asked much like a doctor would ask you more questions when you tell him you think you are having a heart attack. What do you think his response will be? I think it would be "What makes you think you are having a heart attack". We are trying to help confirm your diagnosis and predict the outcome.

We don't even know if it is a 2 or 4 stroke. That would make a difference, wouldn't it???

Have a great day,

Rob.

Yes! If it is a 2 stroke You are leaning out the engine and it will run erratic, and will over rev at idle . You will blow the engine. If it is a 4stroke you will lose oil into lake and take your crankshaft bearing out or worse. Are you sure it is leaking? How does it run? The oil could be leaking down from some where else. Make sure ! As there is a great difference in cost for repairs.

Re: Does anyone know if Is it ok to run a motor if ..............

its a 2 stroke 175 Johnson last owner said It was rebuilt last yr ! The power head was pulled due to the sleeve had drop out of the seal and slid down the drive shaft . Reinstalled the sleeve and powerhead and still have oil coming out around of the sleeve from the seal and running down the midsection after turn it off and sitting. its a deep black /blue oil not from the carbs . The motor runs good starts right up but I did notice the # 6 cyl is 100psi and the other 5 cyl are 106psi . It does have a little surge sometimes at idle at 650 rpm in gear and also when I was in the ocean runing around 2500rpms I notice a little rpm surge. I not crazy about fixing it right now but if its going to run me lean and damage my cyl I will address it now . thanks for the input !

See how helpful that was. you would have had an immediate answer instead of 6 or 8 additional questions. The logic on this forum is that if someone asks a question such as yours, they probably don't know the answer and if they don't know the answer they probably stand the chance of a mis-diagnosis as well. Had we said "no problem" your response after your engine died might have been those "yo-ho's" don't know what they are talking about.

Re: Does anyone know if Is it ok to run a motor if ..............

I am not a master mechanic, nor do i claim to be, but seems to me that if "I" repaired that sleeve for you, and it slid back down, i would feel obligated to repair it for you. Being a sleeve, (i have not looked at the parts breakdown for that engine), would it, or would it not need an "inner" seal as well? If it has slid down the shaft AGAIN, i would look for the cause of the problem, because it is obvious there is one, rather than "patch" it up.
in my PERSONAL opinion, if i had any doubt as to if it would hurt my engine, i would darn sure not even take a chance. you are looking at a very expensive repair if you do run it, and when it seizes, and it will, you will be WAYYYYYY out where you do not want to break down, It always works out that way.
I had originally asked that question to gather more information so everyone here could help understand the problem a little clearer, i had then decided i was not going to post back, due to the comment, but i did notice you had just asked the same question in a earlier post. Why not just ask it again in the post, rather than start another. You did make a very wise descision to ASK before you kept using it. There is no dumb question.
I am done posting on this thread, but i will happily offer my opinions on the FIRST thread that was started on this same topic.

I am lost as regards to a sleeve, in relation to the lower crank seal. The seal as I'm thinking about is pressed into the bottom of the main lower bearing, seal housing assembly. What is this sleeve?
