does the lower ubit supposed to have side to side movement

I have 77 140 r or 1 lower unit.I pressure tested it seems to be leaking between the water pump and the lower case.Is the upper shaft supposed to have side to side movement.I thought if that is not normal that maybe where the leak is.I put a new water pump on it last year was filled it with oil and it had water in the lower unit with a brief run at the lake.I put new prop seal and shift shaft seal but it still leaks water in the lower unit. help please thanks phil

yes there is a little play in that shaft.
When you replaced the waterpump... did you just to an impellar change or did you replace the comepleat lower housing???? There's a seal down there to.

Have you removed the outdrive and checked for water in the bellows? If you did, did you put new seals and gaskets between the drive and the bellhousing ?
When you had the upper and lower seperated, did you replace the quad ring that seals the passage between upper and lower units?

I was trying to get the lower unit to seal before I went any further.Pressure test and what ever.I am thinking about buying a new water pump kit which is what I did before.I still dont know if if it my be an alpha one lower unit because it does not have preload pin.. thanks phil
