Re: Does the type of 2 cycle motor oil really matter

I work at a dealership so I am a bit bias, but There are signifigant differences between oils with tcw-3 rating. Not all synthetics are compatable with all engines too. Of all the engines i have taken apart from detination "grenading" all were running non engine manufacturers oils. That may just be coincidence but... I only run Yamalube, but any manufacterers oils are good, Walmart doesn't care about your engine, just a low price.

Does to me. My 15 HP Force OB was smoking a cloud when using the recommended Quicksilver 2 cycle oil. My lungs got tired of that ... (tiller)

Switched to Amsoil Injector 2 cycle oil and imediatly the smoke and smell was cut by 66%

Now thinking of using their Saber OB oil at a 80:1 mix ratio to cut down on the remaining 33%.

Cheers

Re: Does the type of 2 cycle motor oil really matter

Many people seem to think this debate is simply about money, but I think many of us just feel like we are paying top dollar for a pretty good oil (as opposed to a very good oil) when we by the OEM oil. I run only Optimax oil in my 150 Optimax's, but suspect that Amsoil is probably a better oil. I, for one, would happily pay more for a higher quality oil if I knew it was higher quality, OEM or not.

Is there any concrete infromation about who has the best 2-stroke oil at any price?

Again, use the search feature.

You are not going to get much response from the regular posters on this issue since it has been debated so many times. Very few things invoke as much debate as oil does thus there is a ton of material in the archives for you to read.

There are many good oils out there. Good luck! :)

With my VRO system....if it smokes then you know it not only got ther but your motor is receiving the oil. Mine smokes at first start up from cold but quickly dissipates to next to nothing when warmed up.

I have a Yamaha Wave Runner 1999 800 GP I had one mechanic say "buy the 2 stroke marine oil from Walmart, its all the same". I asked about Amsoil vs Yamalube since I run Amsoil in my Bike and the Yamaha dealer mechanic said "Amsoil is over rated for 2 stroke marine, we see much more wear and cornflaked pistons with Amsoil as opposed to Yamalube" Now he could be biased but that is a pretty bold statement. What do the experts here think about that?

I'm not an expert but the only place I'd even consider using amsoil is in my 20 yr old weed whacker. Wallyworld oil and Yamalube I'd use in a heartbeat on any engine that speced their ratings. They both have real ratings/certifications, not imaginery ones.

I have a 1954 evinrude 15 hp, that has been run every year since new. From my grandad to my pops to me, it has ran what ever oil could be afforded at the time. It is the most reliable motor I own and has never needed a thing but plugs, carb kit, and coils. Now who's to say that it wont s#!t a rod tomorrow? Who knows? But for my money, as long as it has the proper rating oil is oil.

We all know that I'm Amsoil Bias, but I would not use any TC-W3 oil that had a picture of an air cooled product on it. I'd use a water cooled oil only. I do not beleive in a dual purpose TC-W3 oil.

I'm not sayng wallyword has done this, but Foodlion got in truble for puting the SAE seal on foodlion brand moter oil when it had not been tested by SAE. I leared about that in one of our oil discussions in autotech school. The point of this is just because a bottel says something does not mean its not imaginery. I don't know who gives out the TCW-3 stamp.

Nobody that I know of gives out the TCW-3 stamp. The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) licenses the use of the TC-W3? logo, based on successfully passing certification testing. You can see the list of oils licensed to use this logo at nmma.org.
