Ok, I just bought a drive off e-bay 2 days ago Its coming from California so I won't have it in my hands for a week. It was described as a bravo from a 92 high Hp big block boat with only few hrs on her after rebuild. I glanced at the pic, the unit looked clean new paint etc. came with gimbal and all. last night I took a good look at the pic and it dawned on me it looks an awful like an Alpha. I thought a Bravo case was heavier looking , the water pickup was closer to the edge on the lower and the nose cone longer. I did send a request for the SN but it might be already packed for shipping
I figured one of you pros out there at a glance might be able to look and say Its a bla bla bla . I want to order the gaskets bellows and such but I don't want to order the wrong ones

Thanks Bond-o & Chris
you confirmed my suspicions, I have looking at lots of them lately it didn't click at 1st, I had read the description and only glanced at the pic .

With the Bravo lower, I thought it had a longer nose cone with a step on its leading edge of the lower. Well I got it for a good price worse case if I decide not to keep it I can split it up and sell it off and make some pennies off it

The very latest it could be is 1990... Gen II started in '91.

550hp??? I seriously doubt it would still be in one piece if it had that much power being pushed through it.... They are, at best, good for about 300, although Merc ran them for two years, (1986/7) with a 320hp big block.... Guess why they only ran a short time?

I agree, can anyone say "GRENADE" I am going to contact him in a little while and see what we can work out. As long as the drive is good I think its still worth the money, kinda, sorta, maybe. My alpha on the Sea Gem is junk along with the Gimbal. I was upgrading to a bravo because the price was right and I am building a 383 . But I also have no intention of playing Johnny Racer so I would probably be fine with the Alpha

The lower case is DEFINATELY NOT A GEN II. The shape of the skeg is the easiest visual clue to tella Gen 1 from a Gen 2 apart. That is a Gen1!

0C479456

It's a Gen I, 1988.
Ratio is 1.84:1

The only engines that ran that ratio were the ubiquitous '470' and some of the earlier V6s....

A V8 wants a ratio of 1.5:1....

He offered a refund immediately, I have to give him the benefit of the doubt. I did get it on a 2nd chance offer He said that his boat mechanic told him it was a bravo so this might be a trickle down effect. The Mechanic might be the culprit. He has 3 boats that he is playing with. I told him to get a new mechanic and join iBoats where there is a wealth of knowledge in a very friendly environment where we all help each other (I had to get a plug for the site in :D )

Well, in the only picture I see, I can't see the nuts of the stainless steel U-bolt that sticks out of the gimbal ring of a Bravo. It looks like painted bolt heads to me, and that's an Alpha. Also, you noticed that it's had the steering arm "bandaid" fix done to it right? See the plugs in the side of the very top of the outer transom plate? That system has some wear/tear to it.
