Just got an eight week old Golden Retriever puppy on Thursday.

Just took him to Petsmart to get his 2nd deworming. By the time they got done examing him the bill was about $150. Then we looked into their plan. For $39 plus $32 per month he is covered for almost everything including neutering for the 1st year. I ended up only paying $72 today and then $32 is automatically charged to my card each month. I know it would have cost me another $150 in three weeks for his last round of shots so the plan seemed like a very reasonable deal for the 1st year. Not sure if I will stay on the adult plan after the 1st year is over or not.

The Vet I was going to locally for the last two dogs was pretty expensive, but he was a caring Dr and I liked going there. Going to see how this goes with the Petmart plan for a year and then decide whether to go back with the Vet or not.

That's good to know; I'll have to check it out. I try to take Goon ( my dog ) there every couple of weeks to keep him socialized - he really likes greeting all the dogs, and I like to see, and meet them all myself. I am a great proponent of the breed - it gives me a great chance to show him off - his wonderful disposition, and awsome physical attributes. Thanks for the info!

normally yearly for two mini dachshunds 720.00. We did spend 5000 on one in 2007 and 5000 in 2009 on the other for back surgery--made them able to walk again--but was a hit.

They definately look like they are worth it. My last dog had his eye punctured - that was $5,000 - saved his eye; some of the best money I ever spent!

Thanks--yep-there was no question--they are our kids so to speak. It is amazing what they can do to help out a pup. one day they are paralyzed--the next they are walking like normal--it's just amazing. The red one will be 13 this year and the black one will be 10. That is something else being able to save a punctured eye-glad to here.

My general rule of thumb is once they reach nine or 10 I will not spend big bucks on them. Two years ago my male Golden was 12 and was not doing well and I thought he was about to die. I ended up spending about $500 to try and save him. It didn't work and on a Sunday morning I had to call the Vet to come in and put him down. Since there was no staff there, I had to hold him while the Vet injected him. I was keeping it together pretty good, but when I looked up at the Vet and there was a tear in his eye, I kind of lost it and just ran to the car. That ended up costing me another $300.

When my last one who was almost 12 suddenly got weak in a matter of eight hours to the point where she could not even get up off the ground. I took her to the Vet the next morning and he was shocked that she could be that weak in a matter of about 12 hours. She had some internal bleeding and all he could do was exploratory surgery. I said if she was nine maybe, but at 12 I can't see it. Believe me when I get a tear in my eye when I type that, but I also think it was the humane thing to do. The Vet totally agreed too.

Granted Goldens rarely live much past 12 and smaller dogs have a much longer lifespan so I might think differently with a smaller dog.

I've never really had dogs make it much past about 10, I have one that's 9, one that's 8, and one that's somewhere around 4 or 5. The oldest is pretty healthy but who knows for how long. I've also had 2 die while in boarding so it makes me a little nervous going on vacation next week. Not sure I want to be there for the end if or when I do have to put one down, I haven't yet.

back to the topic at hand one of my girls gets to see the allergist today, that's about a $75 exam and $160 for 2 months worth of pills. Looks to me like she has a skin infection so there's probably $30 for the scrape and another $20 for antibiotics I'm guessing.
