Can't find a sign of water anywhere. Changed oil. No water. Pulled plugs and there all dry. Turned engine over with plugs out and no water. Also found a drain on manifold and no water.

I did some tests the book calls for and the coil failed a test. Considering the spark looks weak I think its the coil. Now I have to figure how and where to get one.

Ok,

I am a little confused.....You have a MAJOR water leak from a possibly rotten transom (which also will possibly result in major structural problems) , leaking exhaust tube or other place but you seem more concerned about getting the engine running and installing a better bilge pump?:confused:

Am I missing something?........I guess I need to read the previous messages a little more closely.

You have to read fiscoboaters thread, "1995 searay here I go again" Sounds like you have skills, just need to decide how much you like your boat. This all sounds fixable. Get the coil and see if that helps with the engine. If you fixer up right she will last another 20 plus yrs. for ya.

Did u bother to pull the dist. cap? I'll bet anything u have moisture in the cap & on the points, etc. And I think you're wasting your time. Your main issue is the leak, but it's your call.

Please read entire thread. And please dont insult me. First off I never once said anything about using a bigger bilge pump! I was being informed as to why I should have had a bigger bilge pump. Secondly I want the engine running agian before I pull it out. Seems that having engine running again before doing all the work to the transom would make sense.

Not sure how

No not at all. I just want engine running before I pull it. Need to make sure its ok before hand. That way when it goes back in I know it was all well and fine before hand.

I see no point in fixing transom if I had somehow ruined the engine. Just what I want to do. Would make me feel much better.

I pulled Dist cap when boat was on the water. Dist was dry. Not points.

Ayuh,... An ignition issue is minor, You've got bigger fish to fry....

The ignition can be dealt with on the garage floor, or after the hull is repaired...

Well, if you took my comment as an insult, please accept my apologies!

To most of us the problem is the 800lb gorilla in the room.......... (the boat!) The engine is just a small part of the equation!

Will test engine with coil hopefully tomorrow afternoon. Then engine will come out this week-end. Hope it all goes well and I find that the rot is very little but who knows what will be found. Either way its going to be fixed

If u check out the restoration forum there are hundreds of threads on transom repair. Heck, u may luck out & find that it's only the u-joint bellows or something besides the transom. There must be some serious rot for the bilge to fill up that quickly. That's why I suspect something else. And if u found no water in the oil, then your engine is probably fine.

I hope. I just hooked up new coil. No change. Engine will not run correctly. Acts like it is out of time. I have no idea. I will have to get deeper into this week-end I guess. I want engine running before I pull it which I had planned to be this week-end.

Did you check timing? how about your wires? could they have gotten crossed? How about the coil wire? did you check ALL of the plugs?
just some thoughts

Good points. I have no idea. No way wires got crossed and I already double checked. Not sure how timign could or would have gotten off but I will have to check it all. Makes no sense but I should get it figured out.

Just a few thoughts...
Did the wiring harness get wet when the bilge flooded? Did you check your ground connections for corrosion? How confident are you that water wasn't introduced to the fuel system?

If possible, start the engine when it's dark out. Then with it running, look for any arcing around ignition wires, distributor, etc. Old shadetree mechanic trick.

Any chance you could have injested some water and bent a rod? Did you do a compression check?

While wife was busy cooking I messed with boat yesterday. Engine is running fantastic again.

Real strange. I pulled plugs and replaced with some others I had and it fired right up. Go figure.

When I get home today I will start on pulling engine
