Hey Sam...and Bard1......

Sounds like I have a lot to look forward to when I arrive in Florida.....No one slowing down??

Although, we do have a big ocean to keep away from people......lol

Seriously, in general, it wouldn't seem too difficult to at least give someone a wide berth when passing (a stationary fishing boat)??
I guess that no matter where you are, some people just don't care and are rude!

If your having a lot of problems with to many high wakes from other boats while you are fishing, there could be a benefit from it so be creative and take advantage of the free application.

Carry a extra pole already set up for jig fishing, and drop the bait over the side and while your boat is rocking and bouncing the pole and bait will be on automatic jigging up and down for free.

My opinion for free, and no chum needed. :D

Re: Don't slow down!

As a fisherman I can understand both sides of slow down and going balls out. I also understand that if I'm fishing in a lake full of ski boats and jet skis I'm not going to have a relaxing time.

Here in WA the boating/ski season doesn't really open up until about mid June anyways so that leaves plenty of time to fish those lakes in the spring. However, the times I do get pissed is when I'm on the lake fishing on a 45 degree day and I'm anchored and get buzzed by the only ski boat on the lake. I'm not talking buzzed like 100 yards away, I don't mind that small wake when it hits my boat. I'm talking about within maybe 20 yards of the boat. To me it's just rude with a wide open lake to come that close to any boat that's anchored. Even with my fishing boat, I try to leave a wide berth for other fisherman.

Re: Don't slow down!

sometimes there's the conflict between fishermen at the hot spot and water skiiers where the same hot spot is the only place nearby condusive to skiing (deep and calm). The fishermen act like they are entitled to peace and quiet and a skiier is somehow violating his turf. It's the same by analogy as fishing in the channel--you can't plop down and expect everyone to go home a leave you alone.
FTR I fish a whole lot more than ski now. But I know that sharing nature means tolerating incompatible use at times.

Fish early or expect traffic. Stop crying about it.

Fishermen often setup about 25 yards from each other in a small lake - so about 4 or 5 take just about the entire section of lake unless you go within 15-20 yards of them. Sorry guys, it's not YOUR lake.

IMO, as a group, fishermen have are the most inconsiderate of all boaters - and they can act so innocent because "they're just sitting there" while all the other boat cause all the trouble. NOT.

This is a great attitude you display here . . .

So what you are trying to convey to us is that it's OK to call me to let me find a boat for you because I'm stealing free advertising for my business off this iboats site but I'll take your money even if you are a freakin "fisherman".

Ya, I agree with ya . . . most of the problems on the lakes are intensified by all those fisherman just sitting there drowning a worm

Re: Don't slow down!

I don't think any fisherman should expect anyone to slow if they are a reasonable distance from a boat.. Waters are to be shared with everyone my biggest concern are people to close when they could be further away.. Some fisherman have a mentality that the water is just to be fished but you have to share the waterway with jetskiers and boat traffic of all kinds. Coming from a fellow fisherman yeah sometimes I get annoyed but I have to remember that its not just me out there.. I fish the flats on a 18' boat and have 60' trawlers sharing the same area.. they can bee hundreds of feet away even thousands and the wake will get to me and its up to me to respond and its part of fishing in a small boat in big water..also if there is a cove on a lake and its pretty large but there is someone fishing in that same cove.. i will ski there and I will keep my distance.. do you think if they pulled up that same area and someone was skiing it would stop them from fishing..?

Wow, I was just venting.

Point being you throw alot smaller wake on plane, I personally don't slow down, except that one time, a canoe guy was having a cow so I slowed down, I think he would have rather had me stay on plane.

I understand I am on the river and there is no speed limit, as long as you are a safe distance from my boat go as fast as you want, if people actually slowed to no wake that would be fine but it always seems they are just over that, i actually made an unspillable beverage holder cause I lost so many to them.

Welded a couple peices of flat tube together and filled the ends with lead, weights 3 lbs and it can hold a full bottle of beer at a 45 degree angle and not spill.

LOL nice.. I always seem to spill whatever I'm drinking while fishing near the mouths of rivers.. 5ft wake + 18ft boat + beer =

The least amount of boat in the water, the less wake. I steer clear of fishermen, sitting on a weed bed. They are trying to make a living. The thing that p#sses me off is the wetjets. they RUN! by at 70 mph. 20 ft. of your boat.

Jet skis in my opinion are a lot of fun, but they should be banned from most lakes and only allowed to be used on certain lakes.

I always feel bad for the lake front property owners who have to hear a group jetskis night and day flying around in circles in front of their property for hours at a time.

There of course are people who use them responsibly, but that's about 10% of the ones I see using them. You will see, they will ban them from most lakes eventually.

Ever have or watch the jet skiers cut by your boat 10 feet away from you as they try to jump your wake Yep, they will bring the ban on themselves and it can't be too soon for me IMO :D

Re: Don't slow down!

Seems to be a lot of Jet Ski hate here. I have spent some time on boats and skis and can say I show the same respect no matter which I run. I might fall into that 10% though, so who knows? Banning them because they make noise in front of waterfront houses??? That I don't understand, what watercraft drives by and doesn't make noise???

I personally woud show respect to a fisherman, afterall your responsible for your wake. The posts here mentioning "where" the fishermen are fishing make sense though. If you want to fish on the banks of the channel in a 100' wide river, you really can't expect me to drop off plan to idle speeds for a few minutes to not disturb you. Or can you?

I don't slow down unless its a no wake zone or a narrow channel. I always give a wide berth for fisherman when going by though. Been there done that. If i just slow down but not to close to idle spped my boat which is actually an 18ft hull but very deep will leave a hell of a wake behind it and just make things worse.

Re: Don't slow down!

No one will ban jetskis on lakes.. I guess i could understand if it is a private fishing lake but they have equal stake on public land/water as anyone else.. the same could be said of racers and bass fisherman on any one of the lakes i go to.. I even see the boat racers running 80+ in the rivers.. They give ample room for the most part and usually i can only see them hurting themselves.. Just the same as saying guns don't kill people people kill people.. jetskis don't cause problems Idiots do..

And the fact of waterfront property owners and noise.. who cares they knew what they were getting into when they purchased a home on the water. All watercraft make noise and a screaming v6 2 stroke is about the loudest thing out there..

Re: Don't slow down!

I make it a habit to slow down for folks fishing, I slow to no wake speed and I do it well before I ever reach the fisherman, so he can just sit and fish. I have always tried to be considerate because I hate to sit and fish and fight off a big wake. I always preach to whoever is driving my boat, NO WAKE near any boat fishing.

Best advice I ever got, bow high = big wake, bow low = little wake, idle speed = minimal wake

TC

Me too!!!
I always drop to no wake speed when passing smaller boats and canoes.
I slow down a long ways a way as well so that the increased wake that forms as I slow down doesn't affect the other vessel.

It's the Yahoos that wait until they are 10 feet away from you that cause the biggest problem.

Re: Don't slow down!

Me I don't care, if you're out there skiing around, and just enjoying yourself, I'll let the wake bob my lure for me. I might even watch for the fun. We can enjoy the water together without harm. Both in my new boat, and my little 13' fiberglassic. Even the jet ski's don't bother me buzzing by...so long as you aren't intentionally trying to be an ***.

If you're like the tools last year in their 80's ski boat and probably 200+ hp outboard, going back and forth beside me (it is a narrow channel) hitting the gas real quick lifting the bow then cutting the gas trying to make as much wake as possible. Well that'll kinda make me pissy.

That said, I also tend to fish the shallows a lot, (2-3feet of stumpy water) so the jerks eventually get what's comming to them, and I'll be too busy applying sunscreen to help.

Don't get me wrong if I'm out on a small river and someones fishing ill do my best to slow to no wake.. i may even chat with them but when theres a fishing boat every 20 feet I don't because i have to get where I'm going... I watch for really small boats but I consider my boat to be small around here and don't think i could cause much harm..
