Subject: $800 '72 16.5 Orrion trihull Ford 302 and Volvo 270 outdrive. (Used 6 to 10 times a year on river and lakes)

Issue:
"Someone" left the bung in the bilge drain all winter (boat on trailer) and the lower engine sat in water for a few months. Enigine runs fine put when its cranking or running water drips from the port side of the bell housing (about 5-6 inches above the bottom, at the bolt that holds it to the transmition).

Lame attempts to deal with problem:
I pulled the sillicon caulking/seal off the bottom of the outdrive/transom joint and it drained over night from both corners.

Questions for experts:
Is it safe to assume that, since the water only gets in when the bellhousing is well (4-6 inches) below water, that this problem can just be monitored? (make sure to keep water out of bilge)
Or do I need to split everthing and reseal?
Or would this be the time to install my other "rebuilt" (according to PO) 270 outdrive?

Also what would/should these types of refitts reasonable cost?

And what is the best manual to aquire?
