Subject: $800 '72 16.5 Orrion trihull Ford 302 and Volvo 270 outdrive. (Used 6 to 10 times a year on river and lakes)<br /><br />Issue:<br />"Someone" left the bung in the bilge drain all winter (boat on trailer) and the lower engine sat in water for a few months. Enigine runs fine put when its cranking or running water drips from the port side of the bell housing (about 5-6 inches above the bottom, at the bolt that holds it to the transmition).<br /><br />Lame attempts to deal with problem:<br />I pulled the sillicon caulking/seal off the bottom of the outdrive/transom joint and it drained over night from both corners.<br /><br />Questions for experts:<br />Is it safe to assume that, since the water only gets in when the bellhousing is well (4-6 inches) below water, that this problem can just be monitored? (make sure to keep water out of bilge) <br />Or do I need to split everthing and reseal?<br />Or would this be the time to install my other "rebuilt" (according to PO) 270 outdrive?<br /><br />Also what would/should these types of refitts reasonable cost?<br /><br />And what is the best manual to aquire?

Re: Doooh! Water in bell housing. Help!

I read the FAQ (no help) and searched for similar problems. Seems most peoples problem is bellows related. My problem is the boat filled up from the inside (rain with the bung in). I have not yet secured a manual, and was wondering how to make sure the water is out of the bellhousing/drive shaft area so it does not wash any bearings, etc.

There's a little tin cover down there... The one that gets in your way when changing the starter.... It's held on with 4 little 1/4" bolts.... Take it Off.....
