Replacing my buddies Volvo Penta DP-SM lower unit, he lost his entire gear set in the salt water....so his old case is not a candidate for rebuild.

I have a few questions, sense I have never changed or removed a Volvo Penta Lower unit, just not a lot of them in Charleston.

I took it off...and was shocked because of the notion that it shifts off of oil pressure...is this right?

I have to replace the Props...is there any special tool or Nut I need to reinstall the props?

I take it that I fill the lower unit and the outdrive through the top of the outdrive where what seems to be the only full plug is located? I understand the drain will be behind the props, correct?

What oil do I need to purchase, and how much will it take to fill it back up to the dipstick? I assume he lost it all.

Thanks for any help!!!!

What are you calling a lower unit? If you are referring to the lower half of the outdrive, and all the gears are dead in it, the upper is the same way. You don't just loose half a drive to salt water, you loose it all.
Here is a link to the manual, you need to do some reading.

They don't shift with oil pressure, they use cable shifting in the upper like the older Volvo's do.

Might even go here http://www.volvopenta.com/volvopent...lication_search/pages/publication_search.aspx
Download the owners manual for your particular engine, it will have all you need in it as well.

Re: DP-SM Lower Unit Questions (2002)

Thanks so much for the info.....helped answer a TON of questions. I am am amazed at how much more complex of a operation these are to the Mercruiser outdrives.

What happened to the guy is he slowed for a "no wake" zone, when he went to hit the gas again nothing happened. He turned off the motor, lifted up the outdrive and noticed the props were gone. Called the towing company and was towned back in. When he got it out the water he discovered the whole gear set came out the lower half of the outdrive.

Im not really sure of what happened to it, the threads that hold the carrier are intact....the inside of the housing isnt knicked up or gouged at all. The pinion gear and drive gear look good. Beats me on how this would have happened. Just looked it slid right out.

Thanks a TON for the manuals.....
