Hi guys on my 21ft Pursuit CC thsts drain plug is stuck/frozen. The plug is not on the transom it's in the bilge on the bottom of the boat so they only way to access it is threw the small deck access panal so it's hard to get any leverage on it.

The guy I bought the boat from owned it for 10 years and told me "it did not have a plug" but of course it does , it's just hard to find. And I've owned it over a year so that plugs been in there for a long time. The boat does not accumulate water very much only if it rains and then I just pump it out with a bilge pump or shop vac for small amounts.

I'm worried that if I put to much pressure on the plug trying to get it loose I'll end up spinning the whole plug and it's mount and causing a huge problem since its a threw hull fitting. Does anyone have any advise of a good way to get this thing loose or should I just leave it alone ?

Can you get to it from the outside, to drill it out?

Pursuits are good boats so I'm suprised it's built that way. Is it possible that the plug you are seeing is a plugged-up through-hull for the live well/washdown pump? is there not also a garboard plug on the transom?

Anyway, I'd leave it alone, or install a garboard plug at the transom for those times you want it to drain.

If you must remove it, try a socket tool with a long shaft and T handle; use PB blaster, and do it on a trailer, lift or sandbar!

Ayuh,.... Some bottom designs won't allow good drainage through a transom plug, so ya see drains like that,...
My houseboat is that way....

What is the drive on the plug,..?? raised square head,..??
If so, a 12-point socket, or crows-foot, or 8-point socket, will allow ya to use a racket, 'n extension to get at it...

'n,... If it's Seized,... Now's the time to Fix it, or replace it, the whole thing if necessary...

Take the fasteners out of the flange and remove the whole thing.

Re: Drain Plug Stuck On 21ft Pursuit

Its a brass plug with a T on top. There is no square head to get a socket on it. And there is no flange it just appears to be molded into the hull. Ill take a picture of it this weekend.

Yes I could get to it and drill it out from the underside of the boat but I dont want to do that..yet.

I live well/washdown pump through hull is still there and it has a shut off valve, that is closed because I took the wash down system out of the boat.

I'm not too concerned about it but it bothers me that if we get a heavy rain there is water just laying in the bilge until I can tend to it.

If it has a t-handle it's not threaded. It's held in place with friction.

If its been in there as long as you say, it's dry rotted. A wooden dowl and a hammer on the backside should make quick work of it.

Thats a good point I did not think of it being a rubber plug. I have that same one in my 13ft Whaler but did not think it could be that style plug in the pursuit, I just assumed it was threaded. Ill take a closer look at it when I get back to the boat tomorrow afternoon. Thanks for the reply's all

If it is a rubber plug as the above pic, turn the T handle to the left to loosen the plug and punch it in from the outside to remove it.

I'm hoping it's not a rubber plug, I don't trust those things at least in my whaler I'll know in about 5 seconds if the plug fails but in the pursuit I could have a bilge full of water before I figured it out. Hopefully pursuit came up with a better design than a rubber plug. But I'll look at it tonight after work to confirm.

Re: Drain Plug Stuck On 21ft Pursuit

If I may make a suggestion...

Make a tool!
Find a socket (3/8 or 1/2 inch drive) that's about 3/4 of the diameter of the T handle on the top of the plug. You could buy a new cheap one, or if you have more sockets then sense (like me) sacrifice it (chinese cheapies with no warranty work). Cut slots in the socket with a grinder of some sort. The slot should be deep and wide enough to snugly fit over the T. Use the appropriate sized ratchet and extension with your new tool to unscrew the plug...

This is one I made to replace the cylinder head temp sensor on a 2.0L Ford Zetec engine. I had to cut only one slot just to allow the wire someplace to go when I R&R the sensor.;

Thanks for the tip. That's a great idea and I could get plenty of leverage with a ratchet and extension. I also have more sockets than I know what to do with.

Apply some PB blaster Or marvel mystery oil (My favorite ) beforehand. Socket is a great idea.

Any chance you already have a Basin Wrench in a drawer you forgot about?

I was going to suggest the socket too.... I find Sea Foam Deep Creep has worked wonders on rusted stuck fasteners. It's great stuff!

Re: Drain Plug Stuck On 21ft Pursuit

Nope I dont have a basin wrench

Heres a pic of the plug , got a little lost in conversation and aluminum cans when I got home and did not have a chance to mess with the plug. But after looking at it closly i noticed there is a spot to get a box wrench on it and there does appear to be rubber around the base of the plug. I sprayed some PB Blaster on it to let it soak over night and ill give it a try in the morning.

Rickryder - Ive also had good luck with using deep creep on rusted stuff. Seafoam works magic sometimes

If you can get to the under side of the plug, try some of your favorite unloosening juice up that way. A two pronged attack, so to speak.

Re: Drain Plug Stuck On 21ft Pursuit

that is not rubber tho someone MAY have put silicone on the threads. that is a normal bronze plug... exact same as my boat has in the cabin... use a wrench on the square but ONLY your hand on the t handle as it can easily twist off using tools...... if you put a wrench on it it will most likely come loose much easier than you think.

Looks like a crowfoot wrench would do the trick.
