Yes, it is a "470" with a new name.

I do believe that the boat is marginaly powered, but if you don't plan on carying big loads or watersports the you will be fine, until something breaks...

A 470 is a 470, no matter what they called it.
They all had closed cooling.

Re: dreaded 470 queston.....

Don't scare the nuts off this guy. I've read tons and tons about the 470 and seeing as how I own one and have done a mountain of research I can say this.

The year you have already has the 4 inch exchanger. Some of the earlier models had a 3 inch exchanger which caused some cooling issues.

Two things to watch out for:

The first is that the voltage regulator is water cooled. These tend to fail alot and are not repairable. My dealer quoted me 700.00 for the part. I am sure it can be found cheaper but it would be wise to go ahead and buy a conversion kit and convert your electrical system. You can buy the bracket and alternator in a kit with instruction for $300.00 or less.

The second is that the water pump is turned by the cam shaft. The end of the cam shaft is worn and starts to leak around the seal. You'll notice the leak. in order to repair this you have to sleeve the shaft and install a new seal. These parts are pretty cheap but the labor is where it gets fun.

Maintained these are good engines for the power they provide. They are pretty light and have a fair amount of torque. You have to keep up on the maintenance. Also never ever ever ever ever run this engine hot. With the aluminum block and iron head it will never be right again.

My guess is that you got a good deal on the boat. Do the maintenance, convert the electrical system, watch for the coolant leak and enjoy your boat. My father in-law ran a 470 for years until the boat rotted down around it. We cut the engine and outdrive out and I still use it for parts.

Hope this helps. I'm no expert but I have done a lot of reading!

Proves one point to me.
99.999% of the people you poll may say something is bad. But, since you happen to own one, when that last .001% of the people say what you want to hear, then that is the only thing you will hear, and go happily (and blindly) on your way.

For $1,000 dollars if it runs he got a great deal. What's wrong with what I told him? Lots of people are happy with these motors. Teh negatives I pointed out are the weak points of the motor.

Don that was really uncalled for. I just gave him a realistic point of view. You go on and continue kicking people in the face. People come here for help not to get beat down.

Ayuh,....

The Great Advise I see here is,.....

It's Great that the boat is in Great Shape,+ was bought for a mere $1000.00.....
Now,....
The Sound Advise offered is,.....
Sell It, while it's Still running Great, for a Profit,... Then go buy a boat with Chevy based power to Enjoy.......

Because keeping the 470,... WILL come back and Bite the owner in the Butt,... Big Time....
The owners of the 470s,+ the old OMC Stringers are either willing to admit their Mistakes,+ Move On,.....
Or,.... Their in Total Denial,+ waiting for the Big Hit, that'll possibly be the End of their Boating Lifestyle.......

The way I see it,.....
Boaters come to iboats.com for Truthful Answers,.......
If you want a Sugarcoated answer,...... Go to another forum,........
But,.....
For Brutal Honesty,.......

Welcome Aboard,... You've found the Right Place.........................;)

Re: dreaded 470 queston.....

Last year before my rebuild my 470 ran like a champ. I got the boat for free 2 years ago. The boat sat for ten years and started right up when i got it. If the motor is taken care of and serviced its a good engine. has alot of power and torque. i have a 24 foot proline and full throttle its a 30mph. not bad for a 4 cylinder. I just rebuilt the engine and Im finiding little things that are wrong so im replacing them while its out of the water. preventative maintenance is the key for this motor.

Trade it?

Why not build a frankenstein? Couple the 470 motor to an OMC drive, and put the whole thing in a Bayliner :)

I swear I wanna do that some day just to make some of the old salts here squirm :)
