If you don't know what you're doing, it might be best to take it to your friendly Mercury dealer and have the professionals fix it.

It'd probably take'em all of 5 minutes to figure out where the problem is.

You will need to check it at both ends of the PUR/WHT Wire.
The Limit switch connector will be close to the Drive behind the engine. PUR/WHT and BLU/WHT Wires.
This should get you started.

PUR/WHT = Running Trim Up (Half)
BLU/WHT = Trailer Trim/Tilt UP (Full)
GRN/WHT= Trim Down
RED/PUR = 12v Power

Ok so had a little free time today to do some trouble shooting. I located the 2 barrel connections behind the engine. I used a multimeter and put one in each barrel. When clicking the trim OUT/UP (not trailer) button on my throttle the meter reads 12v. So sounds like the switch is sending a signal to the limit sensor, but the sensor is faulty?

Sorry for sounding like a total newb, but I dont work on things much often. Does my diagnosis sound correct?

If you pulled the connection apart, or the drive was not Fully DOWN, it means little/nothing.

With the Drive Fully DOWN. Unplug the Sensor wires.
Measure the Resistance/Ohms of the two wire going to the Drive.
They should show a short. An Open circuit is a bad Limit Switch/Sensor.

Now Short Together, the two wires from the wiring harness. Simulating a Limit switch in the DOWN Position.
The normal Up/Out button should now work. It will not stop, but it should go UP.
If it works with the short, the Limit Switch/Sensor is bad.
If it doesn't work the problem is Not The Limit Switch/Sensor, and is elsewhere.
