I am about to drop the lower unit on my 87 force 50hp. i have the seloc manual and it shows many different shift linkages.. i am fairly certain i have the 'internal type connection' in the manual. my question is, when you disconnect the shift linkage do i need to mark the rod first or does it only go back together one way? the picture isnt very helpful.. other then that i think i am ready to dive into this water pump repair.

Yes, you need to mark the rod on both sides of the long nut, and two lock nuts. Otherwise, it will be out of adjustment when reassembled.

ok, i havent got it apart yet, but the manual says there is only one bolt, and it is internal, you drop the lower end about 1 1/2 inches, then put engine in reverse, the shift rod will come down, remove this bolt on shift rod, then the lower end is detacched. but i am wondering, does it only connect one way, or do i need to mark it first?

can anyone who has this motor, and has taken the lower end off, tell me how exactly the upper and lower shift rod comes apart? the book says a allen head bolt, catfish - thinks it is a cotter pin, and i would sure like to know before i open it up what to expect. I guess the biggest question is, does it only attach one way, or is there adjustment to it, and if so, how should i mark it to keep the same adjustment? I just dont want to screw it up, i am on a tight budget :)

Just take a Sharpie marker and mark a line starting on the threads, and continuing down the nuts, and threads at the other end. It will get you pretty close when you put it back together.

There should be directions on fine tuning the linkage adjustment in your manual.

Just jump in, the water is fine.

Hey Jas, what size is that cotter pin? Smaller than 1/16? I'm having trouble finding one that tiny.
