DT 85 Timing Question

I have a 1985 DT85. I recently bought a service manual was going through it checking everything. There appears to be an issue with my timing linkage. My advancing lever does not engage the adjuster plate in the full advanced or full retarted position. If i manual move the advancing lever it will engage both positions depending on if i am in gear or not. Once it is manually move it will stay in that position. Also when it is manually moved to engage the adjuster plate the timing alignment marks line up according to spec in both positions, so the adjuster plate is in the correct spot.

I have attached some pics of the lever fully retarted and fully advanced, also one pic of the assembly. Could this just be a weak or dirty spring (#15 in the last pic), or is there something i am missing.

Re: DT 85 Timing Question

For clarification i have attached some pics of my actual advancing lever in the fully retarted and advanced postions. Again if I manually move it to engage the adjuster plate everything lines up and it will stay there. It just does not have enough force to get there when i move the gear shifter alone.

Has anyone seen this before?

I have never seen this , but if it will move by hand the something is binding up on the timing plate or like you said the spring is broken or is binding up. Just an opinion

Re: DT 85 Timing Question

Just an update on this issue. I removed the timer base linkage from my advancing lever and the lever shifted correctly. So I am still left with week spring or gummed up timer base (Bottom line in the current state the spring does not apply enough force to shift the lever fully). I will pull the spring and clean that linkage next to see if that helps.

Re: DT 85 Timing Question

Just an update on this issue. It turns out the wiring to the timing plate was binding up and they needed a little more slack. The lever advances fully now and with some small adjustments to the linkage it will fully retard as well.
