Dumb Question??

This may seem stupid, but does the key switch on a Mercury have a built in alarm or not? When I turn the key from off to on position, I am not getting a "beep-beep". I know I used to. Everything seems to be working ok, the alarm (which is seperate from the key switch or instruments) sounds if I ground the tan wire in the engine simulating high temp, so it is working. I can't seem to find any info about the switch, or any truth tables on what contacts should be doing in the 3 different positions ( open or closed between which terminals).
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks, Dave

Re: Dumb Question??

The beep beep comes from an alarm module on the motor not the switch.

Re: Dumb Question??

Dave the horn is in the box or console but the sender is in the oil module on the motor the beep on turning the key is a seff test for the oil module to assure you the system is working your is not, the horn may not be getting power you can ck that by disconnecting a tempture sensor and grounding the wire when the key is on you shoul get a steady horn that proves the horn, wiring and etc are working and the oil module has failed, if it don't blow when you have to track down the problem in the wiring or horn

Re: Dumb Question??

Hey D, the alarm horn is mounted in your console. This is to make sure you hear it when it sounds. The actuators for the alarm are located on the motor itself, depending on the engine you will have a high temp actuator, a low oil pressure alarm actuator etc, etc. The power for the alarm comes from the actuators via the ignition switch and will only allow the alarm to sound when the key is on. The alarm should beep as soon as you turn the key on because the oil pressure hasn't built up yet. It should also beep when you have a high temp situation.
First check the wiring to the alarm, make sure all connections are good and that you have the proper voltage. Then start looking at the actuators.

Re: Dumb Question??

OK Thanks all. My Oil Tank is disconnected and I premix oil/gas. So not getting a beep beep when first turning on engine is ok. If I ground the wire that goes to my temerature sensor,(Tan Wire) with the key on, the horn alarms. So, I guess everything is ok.
Thanks,
Dave
