E-Tec - Lund

I suppose the only real reason for this post is to be able to vent. I ‘m not even sure I’m posting on the right forum.
All that being said, I’ll begin with a little history.
I have a 1993 16’ Lund Explorer powered by a 30 HP Johnson, which I bought in July of 2001. Love the Lund, love the Johnson. I’m probably a little prejudiced in favor of Evinrude & Johnson, since I’ve had some type of OMC outboard for around the last 40 years. There was a period in 2001 when I bought my first boat (16’ Sylvan powered by a 25 HP Merc) didn’t like the Sylvan (unstable), didn’t like the Merc (hard to start). Three months later, I sell the Sylvan/Merc, I buy the Lund/Johnson and I’m very pleased to say the least.
As I said earlier, I’m a big Johnson/Evinrude fan. Keeping in mind the fact that they all build good outboards. Honda, Merc, Suzuki, Yamaha / 2 stroke 4 stroke they’re all good. It is a matter of personal preference. Kinda like Jeans or Dockers. They all get the job done. It’s just a matter of which is my personal preference. Thanks to this board, the Bombardier website and people like Seahorse and John from Illinois, I have also followed closely the demise of OMC and the subsequent rescue by Bombardier and most important to me, the development of the E-Tec.
I have recently come down with a severe case of one-foot-itis. To begin to cure this I attended the Chicago Boat Show on January 14, 2006. Upon entering I head directly to the Lund Display. I quickly eliminate the Pro-V as the cost is prohibitive. I however am quite impressed with the 17’ Explorer Crappie Edition. The dealer only carried Merc (I’m fully aware that Brunswick owns both Merc and Lund) and Honda. When I told him I was interested in E-Tec his answer was that he couldn’t understand why anyone would want a 2-stroke. Next it’s off to find the E-Tec that they have running in a tank inside. I found it at a big pontoon boat display. Needless to say I am very impressed with the E-TEC.
So now what do I have? A Lund dealer that does not carry E-Tec. But so what this is only one dealer, and next week is the Chicago Boat Travel and Outdoor Show in Rosemont, surely there will be a dealer there that carries both Lund and Evinrude.
One Lund dealer from Chicago offers Merc (of course), Yamaha and Evinrude. However he does not recommend Evinrude, but will do it if I insist. His question to me is why I would want an outboard that is backed by a company that has changed hands 4 times in the last 5 years and that has an infomercial that is full of false advertising and that if I wanted 2-stroke that Optimax is almost the same thing. “No, price it with an E-tec.” is my answer. Lo and behold the price with an E-Tec is around $2500 more than with Merc or Yamaha because of all the rebates and show specials that aren’t available with Evinrude. I thank him for his time, and move on. I walk away disappointed and wondering if he isn’t “Forktail” in disguise.
The next dealer over is Alumacraft. This dealer carries Merc, Yamaha and Evinrude. He is just as excited and impressed with E-Tec as I am. After taking some good natured ribbing about being at his display wearing a Lund jacket, he explains to me that Alumacraft has double plate hull construction from bow to stern, unlike Lund whose double plate is only from the bow to 1/3 the way to the stern. I look closely at the Alumacraft Dominator and Navigator. Nice boats, but don’t seem to have the fit and finish of Lund. I particularly like the SportTrak gunwale accessories on the Lund, which Alumacraft does not have. Maybe Alumacraft is the way to go. Don’t know.
As a side note I also stop by the Ranger display (way out of my price range). Everyone at Ranger seems to have good things to say about the E-Tec.
Next Lund display, all they carry is Yamaha. But at least they have enough class not to E-Tec bash.
Sorry for this oh so long post. I just had to get this off my chest. Feel better now! Thanks.

Classic case of a salesman trying to sell what he "sells", in this case merc and yammy, and trashing something he doesn't.

Looks like you are doing your homework, I dont know anything to tell you though. I myself would have a hard time deciding on what to buy if I were going to buy new, (Which I never do). Main reason is lack of that amount of funds, but even if I had the money to do it, I still like to let someone else go through the new product hastles. Recalls and such, new product glitches, etc.

I talked to a guy at the boat ramp the other day that bought a new Suzuki 4 stroke, 150 HP I think spring of last year. He has it on an older Ranger. He said its the best thing sence sliced bread and hasnt had one lick of trouble with it.

I think I would go with E-Tech at this point, but not completly sure. I just feel that there is too much maintenance on the four strokes.

Talking to dealers about engines they dont sell is a waist of time as is talking to dealers about the engines they sell is also. Talk to people you see at the ramp, hangout there all day if need be. Hey, its very intertaining watching everyone launch and load there boat if nothing else. :D

OK -- you've experienced the entire ours is bigger, better, faster, and cheaper than their's routine. Fact is, buy what you want, not what someone else wants to have. If you want a Lund, buy a Lund with an E-tec as it appears thats what you want. Search this forum and you'll see there are very few E-tec related posts. They are great engines. I could counter the "Why would want a two-stroke" bashers with "Why would you want a heavy engine that requires oil and filter changes and is not as economical to run as an E-tech nor does it likely perform as well". And the E-tec is cleaner. As to Alumacraft vs Lund -- both are excellent boats. I have an Alumacraft Navigator and love it. My fishing partner has a Lund Explorer and likes it. We spend lots of time on big fresh water impoundments. Both boats provide a nice dry ride.

Re: E-Tec - Lund

We have a similar situation here in San Diego. Unfortunately, most of the dealers who carried OMC products before the bankruptcy switched to Yamaha, and are in to the bashing game. There are also a lot of people posting mis-information on forums here about CA banning 2-strokes (they're NOT), E-TEC failures (I heard from xxx that yyy...), etc.

Some of the regional magazines also seem to be in to bashing Evinrude. One of the larger ones ran an article in which the author said something like "do not believe manufacturers who make claims for 300 hour service intervals", without any proof to back them up. The author also completely dismissed the value of reduced CO emissions.

So far, I haven't heard of a single technical area (other than possibly sound volume, which is a personal thing) where any 4-stroke is significantly better than the E-TEC. Ultimately, I think it will come down to whether or not BRP's claims for service interval are true, and whether or not they suffer any Ficht-like disasters.

Good luck with your search, though. I hope you get the motor/boat combination you really want.

Re: E-Tec - Lund

E-tecs have been out for several years now and if there had been any disasters, they would have appeared in the news and most certainly on iBoats forums. The four-stroke folks bashing the hi-tech two strokes are probably doing so because they themselves are having their share of problems. I recently visited a shop an had a sneak peak in the back room where I counted 18 four-stroke blocks on the floor, all with holes in the block. All I will say is they were gray. Hmmmm.

Roscoe,
After I posted I realized I could have misunderstood your post. You were not admitting to be "Forktail", it was more of a question. Please accept my appoligies. No offense was ment.
