the part circled in red in this picture is what's broken, something got dropped on it and snapped it off.

I'm not so concerned about how easy it's going to be to get parts, and I'm not after an old outboard for an every day runner, I just want an antique, or vintage outboard just to have one

That's interesting that you're into those really old ones. Luckily, I haven't caught the bug for those just yet and since I finally figured out most of the 50's johnsons and always have liked them the best, I probably won't ever stray too far from 'em. My INVALUABLE opinion--a 1956 johnson 10 hp or even better--a '56 15 horsepower, would look awesome on that boat. Kind of like the car advertisement where the guy has the car and the sexy model on the cliff taking a picture of the car and keeps asking the 'gal to scoot back a little bit till she falls off and then says "yeah, that's just right". Have 'ya seen it?
A '55 or 57 10 hp, too. I've noticed some knowledgeable folks on here say to steer clear of the '58 10hp cause the lower unit is weak.
I'm sure you're going to go straight out and fix your boat up just like "I" want it.:D:D
Sure would have liked to have gotten that 25!

cc67, the '54 15 is 67 lbs and the '66 20 is 77 lbs but the 20 is the 22cube model which is pretty much the smallest 20 made... but yes, the 15 is very light and 10 lbs lighter... I didnt realize they were that light...

The '57 10hp is even 72.5lbs so the 15hp is lighter...

I'll keep looking for a motor, my thought is something over 10 HP but not over 20, I already have a 10, and it does just fine on that boat.

With a 20 horse rating, I think maybe a 15 would be about right, but then again, I've never run a 15, and have no idea how it would compair to what I have now.

I think the 9.9 horse I have is 75 lbs, I din't know what that 25 weighed, but from the looks of it, it looked like it was quite a bit heavier

Get an 18hp. They are common, relatively cheap and parts are easy to find and they have the best power/weight ratio. I have 4 or 5 of em... run 2 of them regularly in the summer... one on a 14' aluminum and it's a rocket... and hard to handle without a 2nd person in the front! And they weigh around 77lbs... just enough for 1 guy to carry...

Oh, and the 25 weighed about 94 lbs... a tad hard to carry around...

I'm not picky, I just want an old motor, heck, I don't really care what it is as long as it's easy to tinker on with common tools, I wouldn't care if it was a 1927, or a 1957, but would like to stick with Evinrude, or maybe Johnson, but that's only because that's all I've had so far, and the ones I have seem pretty easy to work on to me.

someone else sugested an 18 Horse, I saw on the other day for $150 but didn't jump on it, I think it was maybe a mid 60's? kind of ugly looking to me, I like the "rounder" looking outboards from the 40's and 50's, did they make an 18 back then?

The 18's started in '57 and went till the early 70's... The Johnson and Evinrudes are pretty much identical... And you can even get an optional electric start on em if you want it...

Re: Early 50's Evinrude? should I buy it?

Here is what I get for speed out of 1950's OMC's on my 12' boat. I expect you should get the same performance.

10 hp - 32kmh / 20mph
15 hp - 36kmh / 22mph
18 hp - 42kmh / 26mph

The 18 hp is a little scarey in a chop. The 15 hp hops on plane faster than the 10 hp and is a little quicker. My favourite motor is the 1953 10 hp in my avatar, but I prefer to run my 1953-54 15hp Fastwin's. However, you have little selection other than Evinrude for 1950's 15 hp OMC's as Johnson only produced the 15 hp for one year in 1956 switching to 18 hp in 1957. The 1956 15 hp was the first year offered in electric start. But could you expect anything less? It was a huge motor!

with the 10 on my boat, that's what I get, so I'd say their darn near the same,

Mr Sturat, this has been a great thread to read. Thanks now im late for bed, i just couldnt stop reading it. Isnt this place great? Also, we do have one of the better (portland) craigslist's 'boats' that i have seen. Oh and i just happen to have one of those tanks as well. I look at CL every day and remember seeing that '30's motor, intresting. But i cant recall the 25 for a hundred bucks, wow. I have several outboards including a '76 Evinrude 35 on my '65 Larson. I also have an old Johnson 10 hp (year?) that i need help with. Ill soon start a thread for it when im able to post pic's.

there's a 59 Evinrude 18 on there now for 100, this stuff shows up all the time

I have two of the older tanks, but mine are both single line, I prefer them over the newer plastics, I'm going to strip one of the tanks and repaint it, if it comes out ok, I may do a second one.

I was reading somewhere that Portland and Seattle craigslist are either the two most posted to boards, or close to it, (can't remeber now exactly what it was that I read) but this area is way up there as far as posting to craigslist.

I find all sorts of cool stuff on there, you just have to stay on top of it or the good buys will slip right past you.

The 22 cube 20 and 25 hp prior to 77 are pretty light. The manual start is about 85 lbs.

I just looked at the Portland Craigslist and wow...is it a busy site. Over 100 ad's listed today in the boat section and over a hundred yesterday. Here in Ottawa we get 1 or 2 a day! And there are lots of good deals there on sailboats, engines etc... wow...

That is about how it is here in north Alabama samo_ott 1 or 2 if not none at all a day for Alabama craigs list. I have been watching the government liquidation website myself I wished I could of seen the final bid on the 15HP evinrudes they had but I missed the final bid. I bet they went cheap there were 2 in 1 lot for bid. They also have a 225HP mercury on there fixing to come up for bid.

Re: Early 50's Evinrude? should I buy it?

The government liquidation stuff probably went super high. We have the same thing here in Canada (called Crown Assets) and the stuff goes pretty high. One guy out bidded me for a jon boat. I asked him how much he bid while I helped him load up the boat (they also post the winning bids) and he said the boat will cost him $600 by the time he gets it home. Boat was only worth $800 new!
