Easypoxy primer and paint.

Hi,
Has anyone used this stuff if so what are your thoughts. I'm getting ready to prime and paint my cabin and deck. The boat has all new wood glassed in with epoxy. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I also tried searching on this topic I didn't really find much.

I used it to paint the hull of my boat. I changed it a bit by adding Valspar Hardener to the mix at the recommended ratio. Others have done the same. We ALL had great success with the product. There have been some that used it without the hardener and their results were not very good. Personally I think that if you use Rustoleum Pro Oil Based Acrylic enamel and use the Hardener you'll get the same results with a big savings. It yields a very High Gloss finish that is extremely durable due to the hardener. Another added benefit is the hardener speeds up drying time and you can put 2 coats a day on. Possibly 3 if you start early.

Wow that sounds awesome. Can I prime with Pettit easy prime since I already have it. What is the recommended ratio for the hardener. Do you sand between coats of paint if I can get more then one coat a day. What would be recommended for a dewaxing agent. Sorry for all the questions I'm a complete newb when it comes to boats.

I used the Petit Primer with NO issues. BUT If you're going to use Rustoleum, I'd recommend using Rustoleum's Clean Metal Primer. It works on fiberglass too!!! Just read the link and ask questions afterwards.

It's all in the link but.. I usually use a 50/50 mix of Mineral Spirits and Acetone. It all depends on what the temps are when you do the painting. If they are in the 70's I go 25% MS and 75% Acetone. If it's in the 90's 75% MS 25% Acetone.

I can confirm that Easypoxy without added hardener is JUNK. Absolute junk. My recommendation is if you wanna go low-buck you can't beat Rustoleum. Otherwise step up to a true 2-part marine paint. I wouldn't mess with any of the other single part paints.

Thanks for the input. I wasn't sure about the easypoxy stuff. I bought the EasyPrimer last year. I guess I'll take a loss for a better product.

So before I start to primer. What is good to use to get the mold release stuff off or any wax dirt/oil. I'm cleaning fiberglass not gel coat. I have some Pettit brush thinner 120/t10 on hand will this work.

I'd use TSP from Lowe's. TrisodiumPhospate.

That honestly depends. IF the primer is rough, then yes it will need sanded to smooth the surface so the paint sticks and look decent. Even in out of sight places, it will help the finish stay attached. But that is just my $0.02 cents worth.

That's what I thought. I only put a light coat of primer on. I'll give it a light sanding

Would using a scotch bright pad be enough it's pretty smooth after the Scotch-Brite pad

I'd recommend a second coat of primer if the first was fairly light. I used scotch brite pads to knock off the nubs and then shot the primer. After primer coats were dry, I wet sanded with 220 and then wiped down with Mineral Spirits before shooting the color coats.

Thanks I was definitely going to put two coats of primer on. I just wanted to do light coats so it wouldn't have a problem drying. When you shoot the rustoleum primer do you reduce it with acetone.

Yes, about 10% and I use a 2.0mm tip on the gun.
