Re: Ebay deal on Boston Whaler Dauntless 160

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2447813485&category=1296

The same boat is back on Ebay only it is now listed from UK and the picture showing the hull number has been removed. Also, note that the seller has other items on Ebay including motor cycles and a See Doo.

Incidentally I tracked down the hull number MC 3595 SA to a family in Ann Harbor, Michigan who sold the boat two years ago to a family in Wisconsin. They were surprised that there boat pictures were up on ebay.

Just a thought ... each of you that has an Ebay login may want to ask the seller a few questions like what is his telephone number and the VINs on the boat and trailer. He'll recognize emails from me.

Re: Ebay deal on Boston Whaler Dauntless 160

well, i decided to play the game. told the seller it was a nice boat and that i travel to the uk frequently. could i look at the boat. here's his reply:

"In this moment I´m in Italy with busness and the boat will be delivered from here,I will cover all the taxes for shipping and insurance.
I have a contract with Airlines Express products ,I use there services for a long time and for that reason i have a big discount(the cost for delivery will be GBP350, so I can afford to pay all the taxes.
I want to tell you that the boat and the trailer are almoust new,it was used a few times on fresh water, with all the documents and warranty.
If you are interested please send me an email with all your questions and I will be glad to answer to all of them."

so now the boat is in italy, not the uk as advertised. is it a scam? i don't know. but reaffirms my position of not buying large ticket items on ebay.

Re: Ebay deal on Boston Whaler Dauntless 160

I sent the seller on ebay a quaestion as well....and got the verbatim form letter that was just described above...about being in italy etc. I also emailed EBAY, told them that i thought there is the possibility of fraud with that listing..... i did this on some ebay canned form, where they said ebay would get back to me. That was yesterday.. as of now no email from ebay.

I wouldnt expect Ebay to be able to control all the bad on their site....but I imagine they would have a legal issue IF they were informed, especially by more than one member, and did nothing. Not ebay bashing....Caveat Emptor is always one's only protection.

Did anyone look at the back ground of the boat picture? I promise you that is not England or anywhere else in Europe.

Jerz, Ebay will send you a email thanking you for notifying them of your concerns and say they can't tell you anymore about the listing. I would guess in the next day or two the listing will disappear.

Re: Ebay deal on Boston Whaler Dauntless 160

Ebay needs to do more to police the scammmers! Here's the replies that I received over the Thanksgiving weekend....

"For making the transfer you must find a WesternUnion office and transfer the cash at my payment address. If you don't know one, give me your address and I'll search it for you. After making the payment you'll need to send me the transfer details, meaning:
-sender's full name and address
-money transfer control number (MTCN) which they will give you"

"Hi,
I want to tell you that the boat is almoust new with all the documents and warranty too,no problems ,no damage . My buy it now price is the best you could get:$6500, including the shipping and insurance taxes because the boat will be delivered from Germany,Europe.
I have also a %10 discount if you'll buy it in less than 24 hours from now on.
As delivery service I use American Baggage (with insurance and 15 days return policy), because it's the fastest.
Let me know your answer and I will provide you all the details in order to close the deal.
Thanks"

-exact amount sent
As soon as I'll check the transfer I'll ship the package and send you immediately the tracking number and a copy of the delivery papers.
You have my address.
When you will go to the western union office to wire the money, sometimes they ask you why are you doing that. If you will tell them that you send the money for buying something, I will have to pay very expensive extrataxes for making e-commerce. This is the part where I lose.
But the part where you lose is that you will have to pay also a considerable amount of money as a custom duty, which for a brand new item like thiscould be about 1/3 from the price of the item. We can avoid paying this money, because it will be enough for you to pay the %5 taxes for the transfer And because I'll make you also a discount even if it's an excellent price, we can act as following.
If they ask you, you can tell them that the money are for a relative/friend. I will also do the same thing. I am not willing to spend some useless money, this way we'll avoid it.
I hope you will understand why I am asking you this and I also hope we will end the deal sooner."

"My anme is Jake Barat and here is my address:
Maria-Theresia-Str. 21
81675 Munich (Germany)
Please send me an email with all your questions and I will be glad to answer to all of them.
thanks."

"I have a cotract with American Baggage and I use there services for a long time, for that reson I have a big discount(the cost for the transportation is $650)so I can affort to shipp the boat and pay all the taxes.
The boat ( and the documents too) will arrive to your door in 2-3 working days.
As a payment methoud I prefere wire transfer.
Waiting for your answer"

"Ok all the papers are in english and the boat and the trailer have US title.
I have a smoll busness so I try to survive in this, you know that the competition is very big.
Let me know if you are interested.
Thanks"

Re: Ebay deal on Boston Whaler Dauntless 160

KM2.. Yes I checked the hull registration number. In 2001 it was registered to a family in Ann Harbor, MI and then sold to a family in Wisconsin. I'd didn't do any checking beyond that.

The seller over the Thanksgiving weekend was "natedog1965" who said he was from Germany. When I checked with another person on ebay that had dealt with natedog1965 he said that he was provided with the following information...

"Hi Chuck,

This is the address I got off paypal

Nathan Huebschman
7917 Boyd Road
Cannelton, IN 47520
United States"

Now he is nitspits from UK.

This appears to be an ongoing scam for specialty item bagain hunters. I'm surprised people are still bidding on ebay, they must be hungry for that "deal of the century".

Chuck – I am thinking you may have had a positive impact. I was tracking all 9 big-ticket items the guy had up for auction. The links are gone. Can’t find his account. His items were removed from my watch list by E-bay. I hope I am not wrong about this.

Re: Ebay deal on Boston Whaler Dauntless 160

hello
wow some interesting info on e-bay. I have worked the technician side of used cars and boats most my life. and I have seen way to many scams long before e-bay. I get at least 10 calls a year with people whining it cant be blown up I just bought it. the only way to buy a boat is to let a professional look at it, get a marine survey on the hull. the surveyor must be licensed and bonded. the engine should be checked by a local dealer. then you have some recourse. a friend of mine bought a good deal 2 summers ago in hatteras. 20 ft seacraft with a 1999 3.0 mercruiser and genII drive. could not wait for me to inspect it the guy said it ran great only had 50 hours on the hour meter and he had some other buyers interested. even the news paper ad said Runs great. he paid the 2200 dollars and drug it home happy as a clam with his great deal. 5700 dollars later I put the boat back in the water, they took him to court and was able to get about 1000 of it back. beware the killer deals. if it is much below the NADA price there is a reason
good luck and keep posting

The following Ebay item # smells of a scam.

#2448617356

The seller is promising fast shippment of a boat to anywhere in the US, and want you to contact trought a Yahoo account bypassing Ebay's channel. The feedback is for buying, and the boat listed with NR doesnt seem right.

Re: Ebay deal on Boston Whaler Dauntless 160

Johnnybigriger - Send him an email and tell him you travel for business and would like to see the boat when you are close to his location. I blew up one of the pictures that showed the hull registration number - it is registered in Georgia. If this is our boy who has come back as "hunting92" he'll say that the boat is someplace in Europe. He's already mentioned UK, Germany and Italy, so it might be in France this time.

The sign in the background of one of the pictures shows part of a telephone number with a 778 area code. That is an area code for Canada/Vancouver. I would presume the pictures were recently taken there.

NEVER bid on an item were the bidder’s ID is kept secret, like on this auction. You may be bidding against the seller.

Re: Ebay deal on Boston Whaler Dauntless 160

Seller’s email says the boat is in Illinois, registered there. He is moving to Texas and his brother was in car wreck in Greece and needs to pay for hospital. Requires Western Union money order for $3800 sent to his brother in Greece then he would ship the boat to me, paying all shipping expenses. He suggested I better hurry because he is thinking of selling right now for $6800-$7000 to someone else. Yeah, right!!!

Re: Ebay deal on Boston Whaler Dauntless 160

I just email the seller on the 97 Hydra sport. I told him I had a friend with a small jet (he is in a co-op, I said), that would take me to the boat for an inspection anytime this week. I will let the forum know what I receive.

Re: Ebay deal on Boston Whaler Dauntless 160

Well, I just got an email response. Sorry, Chuck, seller says there is no phone because he is moving to Texas. The house is a disaster, no visitors. Just a laptop and 1 chair. Only contact via email. Btw; please send money to Greece.

I sent notice to Ebay about possible fraud, via their Buyers Purchase Protection web page. I know of no other way to contact Ebay about stuff like this. Ideas?

Re: Ebay deal on Boston Whaler Dauntless 160

Thanks for the information. Ebay has a security center page http://pages.ebay.com/securitycenter/ That's what I use to contact them.

I think these are all the same guy. After Ebay gets on to him using one spoofed identity he assumes some elses identity and keeps on scamming with a new b/s story. The reason that I think it is the same guy is because I sent hunter92 an email as well, saying that I was very interested and he didn't reply - I believe he recognized my Ebay handle and email address.

"The sign in the background of one of the pictures shows part of a telephone number with a 778 area code"

Actually I think it may be 770 area code, which puts it firmly in GA. Be nice to be able to look up the hull registration numbers and cross-reference them to a name.

Another "fishy" thing is that the user account name was changed just prior to this boat being posted on eBay. That smells a bit of a hijacked account.

-Roger
