Re: eBay Ripp off

I hate to hear these stories and have to realize that there are so many criminals out there. I have bought 2 cars, both on opposite coasts off of Ebay using money transfers so no recourse would have been possible. One in about 1999 and the other in 2003. Both cars were delivered via motor carrier. Each car was a limited production type of vehicle so I couldn't find them locally and although each served me well mechanically for several years apiece, each had at least one major undisclosed issue which would have caused me to pay less or not buy had I known. One was repainted and although repainted well it was not disclosed the other had a broken air ride suspension that the seller blamed on the delivery service. I learned that you can't win those disputes without a lot of time and mental investment and that it is dissappointing when you actually hear the lies come out of the sellers mouth that seemed like nice guys. I think I am older and more conservative now but I won't be buying any big ticket items off of Ebay any more.

Re: eBay Ripp off

For whatever reason, paypal is doing nothing. I spoke directly with my credit card company again and they are going to credit my card for the entire purchase. May take until next billing cycle, but at least I'm getting money back. Now I'm back to working on the boat and shopping for another motor.
This time I'm leaning toward "if I can't reach out and touch it" I'm not going to buy it. ;)

Good, I have the same policy, anything substantial I want to go see it before buying.

I bought a welder for $40 off ebay, it was dead and for $40 I just lobbed it into the dumpster, saved everyone the hassle of goin round and round arguin over nothin. I find its better to just assume the seller was honest ( even if they weren't) they need the money and I'm giving to charity.:p

It beats going to sleep in your anger. Waking up in resentment ,then carryin that crap around in your head all day, ruminating over it ad nauseum.

I really like craigslist, gotten some great deals .
I wouldn't use ebay for anything substantial unless its a retailer with an ebay storefront.

Also, if they don't take cards I don't bother,
if a bank won't do business with them, why should I.

I've sold a few things on Craigs list and beleive me, sellers have as much to worry about as buyers. My policy is that I don't ship you must pick it up and bring cash with a withdrawl slip. Now, none of that ensures a clean deal but so far it's worked and honest people have no problem with it. In fact, I think it enhances the sale because people think they are less likely to get ripped off. It kind of levels the playing field I think.

However, I live in Northern California and the entire SF Bay Area is within a day's driving distance. I can reach out to a lot of people that don't mind the drive. I know many of you don't have that luxury.

People have asked me if I take paypal or a credit card or even checks. I say no, but just take your form of credit to your bank and get green cash and we'll do the deal.

JP, I'm really happy to here you're getting back on track now.. When I heard you say you didn't even want to look at your boat I was darn near ready to start a fund raiser to help bail you out. I still will if need be.

Re: eBay Ripp off

I DO NOT BELIEVE THIS Yesterday I get an e-mail from my seller. Sez I should have the motor today or tomorrow. Gives me the name, address and tracking number of the shipper in Omaha. I'm thinking this has got to be an April Fools joke in retaliation for my many nasty e-mails. After a bunch of web searching I find the shipper who is sort of a broker or something. I contact the shippers' local terminal in Salina KS. Talk to a real nice guy, tell him my tale of woe and he sez he'll call me back before lunch. And he did. The tracking number, which wouldn't work on thier web tracking site, had 3 too many numbers. He found the motor sitting on the dock in Omaha, the tracking number is in the system and it should be here in a couple of days.

The seller gave me no excuses/reasons for the month's delay in shipping the motor. I didn't return his e-mail. I'm just thankfull it's on it's way. I've already bought decals, OMC fuel tank and paint for the restore job on it.

 Go Figure.....................................................

Re: eBay Ripp off

The beast arrived this afternoon. Of course there were no cables, no controls, wires hanging out. This thing has been rode hard and put away wet one too many times.

My mech was out picking up a boat but his wife said it looks pretty bad. I'll talk to my mech tomorrow after he's looked it over. I don't need any of the controls as my boat has the factory gear still in it. NO key though. It's just the principle of the whole damn thing. I've got my eye on a 77 merc 402 that has tilt/trim added to it. And it's only 2 hours away.

More to come in the ongoing saga of my retirement project.

Thanx for your kind thoughts,,

Well, Murph, sometimes it pays to just keep the faith! Hopefully you will have enough to get you back on your project and we all will learn a little more about the ebay experience. There have been some good things posted since you first started this thread. Hopefully alls well that ends well...

My son has gotten me to feel alittle more comfortable about buying there. We always look for 100% positive feedback, won't buy from anyone else. That's just me..

And I agree with the other posters..contact PayPal, now if not sooner!!

don't let that scare you out of buying from me or selling to me! we have one negative, and it was put there by mistake. the person who left the negative even said so, in her comments. BUT ebay WILL NOT remove it. damn!

but we have over 100 transactions now, so the single negative might have reduced itself to almost zero by now...

just sayin' anything's possible.

Re: eBay Ripp off

and another thing...with paypal, you can still pay with your credit card. they try to make it hard, but you can still do it. so if you have a major credit card like a visa, you will ALWAYS get your money back because they can take it from paypal if they have to.

i tried to buy $50 worth of leather conditioner from an online store, [not ebay], that took paypal. i paid by paypal, with my credit card. when it didn't arrive after about a month, [and got no replies from my emails for the last two weeks of that month], i called my visa company and they refunded my money IMMEDIATELY, on the phone, no ifs ands or buts and said they would handle it from there. i felt empowered. plus, by using my visa, [a starbucks visa], i get free coffee :)

Re: eBay Ripp off

If the credit card refunded your money, yet you now got the motor, no matter the condition, did the seller get screwed now? Or will the motor get returned?
What was the original ad? How was it described?
That is a 40+ year old motor.

When buying an older motor, I begin with a simple compression check and inspection of the lower unit fluid. If both pass, then I pretty much assume the rest is just normal maintenance to be expected. Coils, points, plugs, cables, carb, and prop are pretty much consumables or normal maintenance items on a used motor. (In most cases, I'd rather do repairs or maintenance myself, especially if I don't know the seller).

I'm not siding with the seller, just stating the way I look at an old motor sold with some obvious unknowns. A motor that runs well in one persons opinion may be barely usable in another person's eyes.
I have a buddy that bought a used boat and motor last fall, he raved over how good it runs and how clean it was. What I saw was a total load of junk, The motor had a low cylinder, it needed 4 coils, and would not idle. The tilt and trim was dead, the motor was fixed in position with a 4x4 glued to the transom with 5200.

It wouldn't get on plane, and leaked 2 gallons or more an hour. To him though it was top notch. He sold it to a guy who is still running it, another first time boater who raves about it, but the boat still runs on only 3 of 4 cylinders and still leaks. The latest owner was raving to me what a great motor it is and that it starts every time! No mention to the fact that it knocks, smokes, won't idle and stalls below 1/4 throttle.
To him, I am sure it's in excellent condition. To me, a worn out 1985 Force motor with a nearly dead hole, and large chunks of the lower unit missing is far from an excellent motor. I'd be breaking it down for parts and sending the rest to scrap.

My money has not yet been refunded. Yes, the motor finally arrived. However it was not complete as advertised. It would not run as advertised, It was not a 1965 as advertised. And it was not a 35 hp as advertised. My claim has changed from item not arriving to item being misrepresented. After all of the documentation I provided. my Visa people say I will get my money back and I do not have to return the motor. How can I if we can't locate the scumbag that sold it ?

Kind of like paying someone to ship you their garbage so you can take it to the dumps for them. Sux is an appropriate term. Have no fear, this is just God testing you to make sure you have what it takes to own and use a boat. He tests us all.

Sounds like the seller might have realized you aren't going to lay down dead, so he bought/stole/borrowed an outboard somewhere and sent it to you, just to shut you up....

one lesson to be had out of this mess is to do your homework!there never was a 35hp built in 1965 to begin with.ive had some good luck with ebay, last year i bought a 1939 22.5 hp evinrude for 90 bucks, turns out not only does it run good its a racing motor to boot and nobody had a clue till i looked into it further after buying.

Re: eBay Ripp off / Happy Ending ??

Re: eBay Ripp off / Happy Ending ??

So here's an update on my ongoing saga of the outboard. I got a full refund for my original purchase. That's nice. Still don't know where the fraud is that sold it to me. Of course, now I really don't care. Just hope he's not screwing anyone else.

I found another one in Fla but the seller did not have a paypal account. I told the seller while we were still bidding that no pay pal account, no deal. So he opened up an account. I won the bid on the motor and submitted my credit card for payment, no problem. However, Pay pal gave the seller so much hassle with opening up his account and making him wait weeks for payment
(which they had) he said the hell with it and cancelled the sale. I got a refund from paypal on that deal. Too bad, the motor looked great and the seller who was a marine dealer was a long time seller on e-bay.

I've got another motor which is on the truck enroute from Montana right now. Expect it to arrive early in the coming week. I just couldn't find a motor near enough to see it in person so I had to resort to e-bay. Hopefully this time I'll come out a winner as I'm just now finishing up the last few things on my rebuild and hope to get it wet as soon as I get the hull numbers from the backward state of Kansas. They don't make things easy here. Have to get the trailer inspected by the Sherrif, go back to the court house for the registration and plate. Have to wait 2-3 weeks to get the boat registration from the State fish & game folks. They just don't practice one stop shopping here.

Hopefully the third time is the winner....................;)

They let you make another claim? My wife bought a car DVD Player off E-bay without looking at feedback first. After three weeks of waiting and no responses from the seller, we filed a complaint. Another 3 weeks go by and we get the item. It was broken, missing cables, and looked nothing like the picture. I tried to file another claim and E-bay told me I couldn't. Apparently their rule was only one claim per purchase. So there was nothing I could do. I setup the checking account link on PayPal so I couldn't get a refund. I found the weasel's phone number and just kept calling 5-6 times a day to drive him batty. It just got old after a while, but it was fun.
