Effects of Jackplate on transom

As you folks know, I've been looking for a 18ss and debating on a complete resto project.

Now I've located a minty 1973 18ss with original seats, floors, transom etc. still intact. Its been used little (3-4 times/yr) and always stored inside. This boat is splash ready.

The original trailer and motor have been replaced. It now has a newer shorelander roller trailer (that fits boat ) with new led lights, 2 speed winch, tires, etc. and a 1985 115 Merc. The motor has been on it for about 4 years, but used little.

The merc is a long shaft, so a manual jackplate was installed to elevate the motor.

I'm a bit worried about the potential effects the jackplate arrangement might have on the transom. It seems like the weight of the motor and fulcrum point would be changed such that damage would be likely to occur.

Whadda think?jackplate.jpg

I'm not seeing a lot of setback in that picture. I am not concerned about anything I'm seeing there.

Re: Effects of Jackplate on transom

Hmmm...no comments yet. I'm not expectin a scientific explanation, just would like some thoughts and opinions. I've actually used this type of jackplate before on a different application. Obviosuly, I have some concerns...primarily in regards to weight distribution and torque, although the latter should be less of an issue if the bolts holdiding the lift are the same strength as ones that would be used on the outboard and the contact surface area of the motor and the jack are similar, which I believe they are.

Thanks ez...we posted at the same time again!

Re: Effects of Jackplate on transom

I'm sure someone has done this before and it's just a matter of time before they show up. But I can say that boat can take a larger OB so its not maxed out on weight. The center of gravity is changed but may be too small to matter. I'd inspect the transom very carefully since it's prolly past its life expectancy but if your willing to resto and put a new transom in anyway this too is no problem.
Feel free to post up more pics. Have you heard of the angry mob of henchmen?

Owner sent me some more pics

My first attempt at photobucket...let me know if it works

I doubt that the transom is bad given the apparent condition of the boat...but I'm wondering if this motor/jackplate arrangement will do it in in the near future. It hasn't been on the boat very long.

I suspect that the angry mob of henchmen are black max lovers. I've had both but my heart lies with rude/johnsons. But for the right price, I can live with it.

That's a Tower of Power. Black Max's are newer V blocks. I don't know, I think we're still majority JohnnyRude fans but who knows.

I don't think the jack plate with that other plate would do more damage than without. more surface areas are now on the transom to disperse the forces of the motor....keep an eye on the gelcoat for cracks?

Yea, I know. I also used to run a lot of optimaxs on my work boats...could buy em cheaper than etechs...either way, "henchmen" certainly fits...

Coming soon...More photos of the boat posted on photobucket...whadda thinK?

Thats interesting there Bounce. Its alright with me so long as your dues is paid up.

PHD - That is a cool rig and if the price is right I'd go for it. However, it's getting late in the season and the economy is terrible so you might fall onto a bottom feeder deal soon.

Pics are looking good and always welcome but I'll study our bylaws a little closer.

Yea, got a bottom feeder deal goin on...but I may be further ahead goin with this deal. The trailer alone sweetens the deal, but a verified running motor is also nice. I think I can get it for around $2500.

Holy cow that looks like a nice 73! I have a 73 too...I paid 1700 and that one is in better shape and has a nicer trailer. I have a tower of power too, but of the 72 vintage. The interiors are in similar condition but the paint on the hull on yours is much nicer than the origianl paint that came on mine.

Good luck on the deal, that is a nice boat!

I just looked at the rest of the pics. Wow, what a nice original boat. His price is very fair.

The advantages of shopping around!!;)

Now that is a TOWER OF POWER

I had a 4 Cyl Straight Mercury on my little Nassau - it started like an angry pitbull - spitting bullets and ready to go fight - loved it

Starcrafter65...you crack me up :p ;)

In the matter of days, I've certainly seen both ends of the spectrum.

Heck, you guys might get tired of my posts before I actually pull the trigger.

Nevertheless, I'm seriously discussing this with the boss...

$500 junkie vs. $2500 minty.

The board LOVES shopping threads - as it is our chance to live vicarously!!

I hope most people understand my aim is to crack people up.....

It'll take more than 2000 bucks to get the junkie on par with "minty" - your new boats new name!

But, will I miss the warm and fuzzy feelings of bringing one back to life?

I guess no matter what I end up with, if I wait long enough, I'll get my chance....time is $$$
