Electric shift cable

I am new to the boating community, I resently purchased a 18 ft. 1976 Gulfstream. Upon taking it out for its first trip I found out that the boat would not go forward. I went online and did some research and with the great members of this site I discovered that the electric foward shift coil was bad. I started to take the sterndrive apart like the book said and I noticed that the shift cable needs to be replaced. I was wondering what is so special about the shift cable why does it cost so much. It looks like just a couple of wires. Can someone please explain to me why I cannot use regular wire to replace the shift cable. Thanks.

Re: Electric shift cable

any watertight repair you want to make to wiring is fine. It's your call if the wires are supple and not badly corroded, heatshrink tubing can work wonders.

If the insulation is brittle, and the copper is black...buy new.

Re: Electric shift cable

I'd be more worried about finding a coil, as they are LONG obsolete...at least you can get an aftermarket cable...
