I am new to the boating community, I resently purchased a 18 ft. 1976 Gulfstream. Upon taking it out for its first trip I found out that the boat would not go forward. I went online and did some research and with the great members of this site I discovered that the electric foward shift coil was bad. I started to take the sterndrive apart like the book said and I noticed that the shift cable needs to be replaced. I was wondering what is so special about the shift cable why does it cost so much. It looks like just a couple of wires. Can someone please explain to me why I cannot use regular wire to replace the shift cable. Thanks.
