Emergency secondary motor for Bayliner 2052 ??

Hello Guys,

Yesterday I needed a tow as my 4.3LX V6 inboard dropped its oil filter and oil all over the bilge

This time I was lucky, in that i was in a safe place on a river, could anchor up and wait for a tow home. The boat is way too heavy for oars, especially with current flow.

It got me thinking that I want to carry a second hand steerable power source that I could take out of the cuddy, fit to some bracketry, couple up a fuel line and slowly move back to safety.

Has anyone ever seen a secondary outboard motor fitted to a Bayliner 2052? Any suggestions on mounting? I have a swim platform that is about 18" that overhangs the transom.

As always.. Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Many thanks.. Steve.

A OMC 9.9 or 15 long shaft would fit the bill nicely - - say in the 70s. I had a 9.9 on a 27'er and it worked well. That will of course require you to take along a 6 gal tank of pre-mix.

I think you'd be better off investing in a Boat US towing policy.

Otherwise, you'd need to fit a bracket to the back of your boat and then you need to lug not just an extra outboard around, but also an extra six gallons of fuel. A smaller tank would be useless because pushing a big boat, a small outboard like a 10 HP will need to operate wide open, so you'll be lucky to get one mine per gallon. Of course, that fuel needs to be kept fresh and it's dangerous to keep fuel in a cuddy or engine compartment near the main.

Bad things happen sometimes. Best thing to do is keep up on your maintainance and get a good towing policy. Yes, you may have to wait a while, but seriously consider if the short wait is worth the hassle of buying and carrying all that extra gear?

If you go for a kicker, get a four-stroke so you can tap into the main fuel tank.

My kicker motor (15 Johnson) has a duel purpose, I use it for trolling while fishing, then as a back up power supply in case my main engine dies. If you get a four stroke you won?t have any fuel problems just put a tee in your existing fuel line with a shut off valve, no need to haul any extra fuel around. But now you will need to secure this new power plant so no one steals it. I have used my kicker twice for back up power and will always have one on any boat motor set up. I also carry tow insurance but haven?t needed to use it yet.

You could consider an electric trolling motor. I used a 30lb thrust electric trolling motor yesterday to push my 25ft cuddy into the wind. It was slow but I didn't have to swim home.

I know its an old thread, but I had this same question before I bought the motor. I couldn't find the answer, so I just bought it. A good $100 investment!
