Re: Engine aligning

will do in the a.m. navis.
most of the floatation was fine so i reused it.
anything with deterioration didn't go back in.
for the rest and extra that i'm going to add in the sides i'm using pool noodle.
seems to work real well and not messy.
they seem to handle 50lb's fine and the boat is supposed to weigh in around 1900 lb's so i see enough voids to handle around 45 of them.
along with the original i should be fine.
i built a new front base "wood as was" for the motor mount so will need to realign.
still have a long way to go but will have finished by spring.
going to have made and plan on using 1045 for the tool, then i know it won't flex.
thanks.

Re: Engine aligning

Finished my tool yesterday morning, I just used a mild steel instead of 1045. Now im going to carborize it, hopeing for a few mm of penitration then I will hot dip it for a nice blueglaze so it wont rust.

Re: Engine aligning

well, excuse my ignorance, but how do you go about aligning the engine once you have the tool?

my son is going to make it at work.
i emailed him the print.
thinking things over since you mentioned rust, i'm rethinking stainless.
kind of costly but should work real well.
thanks.

It's not that hard to do. IF your motor mounts are good and not collapsed you simply slide the tool through the gimbal bearinng and into your coupler. It needs to go in nice and easy at 0, 90, 180 and 270 degrees. Read the grease on the tool and move the front mounts up or down until you get it right. Your manual will explain the procedure but in a nut shell that's it.

Wouldn't bother with the stainless, most likely it will only be getting used once a year, after you use it just wipe it down with some oil and that will keep the rust away. Use motor oil, not cooking oil, everyone talks about using cooking oil on tools for storage but its a bad idea as it contains water and corrosion will still occur.

Re: Engine aligning

Just use the grease from the business end of the tool to rub down the entire length.

Re: Engine aligning

Found out I don't need it due to the fact of my gimbal being aftermarket.

You still need it, aftermarket gimbal bearing or not. You are aligning the engine coupler to the gimbal bearing. You need an alignment bar.

PS, there is no such thing as a "Gimbal" you have a gimbal housing, a gimbal ring, and a gimbal bearing. Which are you referring to?

Re: Engine aligning

apparently.....this is just what I was told,
we have an intermediate housing, which is different from a gimbal, and we measure the gap around the housing and make sure it is the same all the way around and thats how you align the engine....no clue if thats true or not?

Re: Engine aligning

I was wondering if it is essential to get your engines aligned, apparently if you don't your splines will get ground off, is this true? We are putting a couple rebuilt 350 mercs in and are wondering if this is just a myth to get your money?
Thanks for any input!

Mercs of any type, have gimbal bearings.
Volvos, have intermediate housings and get measured around the edge. You say you have a Mercs

this whole post was started because he did not agree with me that engines need to be aligned...

alumi numb. Best to ALWAYS start a new thread with your question so as not to loose sight of your post buried in someone elses thread and then it doesn't get confusing over who is answering who's post.
