engine fogging

I know some people here don't believe in fogging their engine when storing for winter....but I was just wondering if you were to add a bottle of oil for a 2 cycle engine to your gas before storing and then run her until you get lots of blue smoke would that serve the same purpose? Maybe it would even coat the inside of the gas tank with a film of oil and prevent condensation?

If I had a carbed engine I would put the fogging oil to it. Recommended by merc to put the 2 stroke oil to it if it's injected.

so merc actually recommends 2 stroke oil for fuel injection? any idea how much oil to how much gas? i have a carbed engine. last year i just sprayed the oil down the throat of the carb while running and let her cut out, but i was thinking it would get everywhere better if it was mixed with the gas........

Outboard mix, 50:1, is fine...

Merc also recommends putting a 150:1 mix into the tank for new (4 stokes) engines as well. It's a good upper cylinder lube...

It's also what I do with outboard fuel that's not going to get used before it goes off. Straight into the wife's car. :D

Then 'everyone' would be an idiot... :D

*Side note* The old Seagull outboards ran 10:1  and didn't foul the plug, very often.

Ah, the only caveat, is that fuel with oil mixed in has a 'shelf-life', which is quite short. Mix your oil and fuel in an outboard tank (20L remote) and connect it up to the fuel pump. Not advisable to mix 50:1 into a 150L tank and have it sit with that over winter. Come spring it may be sour.

Ayuh,..... Foggin' is for L o n g term storage, not the 5 or 6 months my barge sits,.....

If layin' up a motor for over year or more, oilin' it up is the way to go,.....
'n manually rollin' it over every year,.....

6 months, maybe 7 is storage time, but i still rest easier knowing there's lots of oil coating everything.....

Easier way to do it might be to have the engine running at a fast idle, and SLOWLY pour some 2 stroke oil in through the carb. You'll get lots of smoke, and oil coating, and not 'contaminate' the fuel.... Have someone shut the engine off as you finish the oil (I'd use about 1/2 cup)...

Or, pull the plugs, squirt about 20cc of oil into each cylinder, put the plugs back in, disconnect the HT lead from the coil and give the engine about 4 turns with the key....

may be just as well to spray fogging oil down the throat as to do that.....i'll add to gas with tank less then full (half) and then top up in spring...thanks

If you have a carbed engine, I wouldn't even fool around with the mixed fuel. Just inject the fogging oil into the carb as instructed on the can. It's a 3-4 minute job. Couple squirts down each spark plug hole is a good idea.

Last year was the first time I had to do it differently because of MPI. As per the manual, mix up a fuel cocktail and hook it up to the fuel line feed. Run the engine on this cocktail for 10 minutes.
Manual says to mix 19L (5 US gal) gasoline, 1.89L (2 US quarts) TCW3 2 stroke oil and fuel stabilizer. That works out to 10/1 mix. Not sure if it needs to be that strong of a mix, but that is what the manual says.. It's an easy job, just a pain in the butt. Mixing up the jug, hooking up fuel lines, depends on your access to these, etc. One thing for sure NOT to do, don't mix up 20L of this stuff. ONE gal or 4L is lots.

For long term storage, upper cylinder lube and back off all the rockers to not have a valve open (keeping critters out)

For short term storage, not needed

My health is always a crap shoot, and I'm conscious when laying up for the winter, that there's no guarantee that I'll be able to use it next season.

After I've changed the oil and flushed the motors, I change the fuel-water separator. I fill the canister half-way with Marvel Mystery oil, then start the motor and let it run for 15-20 seconds. More MMO down the carb throat stalls the engine. One quart does both engines. I grease everything, drain everything and refill block and manifolds with AF.

I rest easier knowing it's good for a long storage if necessary.

MMO - Cheaper than 2-stroke oil. $3.50 a quart at Walmart/ I have been using it for fogging oil for years. I have not done the control test, but no issues so far.
