Engine painting ? what paint?

First I would like to say hello to you all! :)

I really hate that my engine is getting so rusty. It is Mercruiser 4.3 EFI engine. So I have decided to renew my engine (and because that oil pump broke?).
I have sand ? blasted all parts and now I need to paint them. I am thinking about Electrophoretic painting by dipping (Cataphoresis) ? KTL painting.

http://www.tisel.ch/eng/elektrophoretischetauchlackierung.htm

First I am going to KTL paint all the parts then I am going to paint them with normal paint.
Parts with rubber that can not be exposed to heat (engine mounts, coupling assembly,?) are going to be painted first with 2 component epoxy paint and then painted with normal paint.

What do you guys think? Is that OK?
Or should I after KTL painting paint parts also with 2 component epoxy and normal paint?

Re: Engine painting ? what paint?

Welcome aboard. Lots of good info on this site. Your thread may get moved to another location as this one is for boat questions/topics.

Zinc Chromate primer is used in the aircraft industry and probably the marine industry as a prime coat for aluminum......assuming you are talking about an outboard which corrodes, not rusts (iron oxide), as you mention, which confuses me as I/O engines are usually made from cast iron which rusts....but there could be come confusion in language translation.

On top of sand blasting you should have an excellent preparatory coat for your final coats. If you are going to dip your parts, you are just that much ahead.

If you are going to go with 2 part epoxy, I wouldn't cover it with normal alkyd enamel, unless you are planning on using the epoxy for your primer. If so, I'd personally do it differently, using the ZC primer, sprayed on, then top off with 2 part epoxy top coat.

Sounds like when you get done you are going to have one heck of a paint job. But, I'm not a paint expert, so I'm not much help.

Best I can do,

Mark

Re: Engine painting ? what paint?

Hello Mark!

I forgot to mention that it is internal engine – MerCruiser 4.3 EFI. I have edited that.

Yes I plan to use epoxy as a primer then paint it over with paint. It is going to be blue.
Well aluminum parts are not problematic here. It is the cast ones that are. But they are all powder coated and this coat is pealing off and beneath of it is rust or corrosion.
So I have to figure out something good because I probably won’t have my engine out anymore.

Since you apparently going to do this right, you might contact the primer paint mfgr and get their input on surface prep for the primer, application suggestions, and surface prep of the primer to accept the top coat.....might get both products from the same mfgr to possibly improve compatibility.

Just a thought.
