I have a 2600 LSR 2003 regal I bought new at the boat show. Great boat. however it came powered with a 5.7 GXI motor...great motor until you load the boat with 12 people then you cant even get the engine into the power band. I have a friend who suggested putting new heads on to increase horsepower by 100+. Has anyone done this and if so with what results

Re: Engine power loss

Can you give examples of top speed and rpm when not loaded, and what drive and prop you are running? Could just be over-propped, but we need more info.

Re: Engine power loss

The engine is the Engine from Regal/ Volvo. as well as the prop set up. It has the DP system and the prop's are the standard stainless steal props that came with the boat. The only change that has been done to the boat is the 2nd year that I owned it I had water enter into one of the cylindars thus affecting performance. I took it back to the dealer and they had volvo come in and rebuild the top half of the engine since they claimed it was a malfunction of the engine. When I have 2 people and 1/4 tank of gas I can get 53 miles out of the boat and get it out of the water quickly. I put 10-12 people on the boat it is a whole different story. I am looking to maintain 55+ to 60 miles an hour and have low end power, that is why I am looking to put some mod's on the engine. Thank you for your help

Re: Engine power loss

You are not going to swap heads and get 100hp.

You are happy with the performance with a light load, but when you add 1200-1500 extra pounds it doesn't have enough power. That is why people use different props for different situations. Not cheap or easy to swap props on a DP, but you are overpropped when loaded to the max.

Re: Engine power loss

The 5.7 GXi already puts out 320 prop hp with a DP and you aren't going to get any more out of a 5.7L engine in a boat. If you want to haul 12 people and all their stuff around on a 26 foot boat and go fast, then you really need to look One of These

Re: Engine power loss

Speters,

In my opinion the 5.7 will not get your 55-60mph top speed requirements under load in any configuration in that large of a boat.

The answers to the next couple of questions would change the advice available.

1.) Did the boat ever go 55+mph with a full load when new?
2.) Did the dealer work with you after first purchasing the boat to be sure the pitch matched what you wanted the boat to do?
3.) Did the performance behavior change dramatically after the water-intrusion-induced service?

There are many pitch ranges for the those props, thus there is no "standard" setup from the manufacturer. In general, for any given engine, larger boats will require a drop in pitch when compared to smaller boats. It is part of the dealer's responsibility, in my opinion, to be sure the boat is propped for what the buyer needs. The dealer should have stock available to be able to re-prop as needed. In your case dropping down a pitch or two may be what is needed. That is a large boat and borderlines on needing two drives or at least a big block single drive.

It is difficult to predict if a pitch change would help or not without knowing what you have on there now, and what the rpm is at the reported top speed attained.

With 53 mph being reported at light load I would say the engine has plenty of power. That also makes it sound like an F7 pitch. Dropping down to F6's or F5's would drop your top speed potential but the boat would plane much faster and accelerate better under load.

Trading boats may be your only option, I'm just sayin'.....

I can't believe that this setup will get you anywhere near 53 under no load on a boat this size, I wish it would though!!!

Re: Engine power loss

The reported 53 miles per hour was done at RPM range of 4600 RPM. When the boat was new I had it at 57 mph however this was brand new with 0-5 hours. I think the configuration is great and offers good power I am under the assumption that by increasing horsepower and torque that I should be able to increase MPH and the boat to plane faster. If I am under the wrong impression please let me know this is the first boat I have owned and I am looking to get a little more power and still have a good all around boat.

Re: Engine power loss

You are correct, increasing power will provide better hole shot and or higher top speed. You are also right about needing another 100+ hp to keep the performance you have now when your are loaded with 12 people and gear.

However, you are not going to get it out of a 5.7 without a supercharger, which will void your warranty(if you have any left) and seriously shorten the life of your engine. This is not a car, there is very little (if any) aftermarket support to help you retune the EFI. You need a bigblock and you can plan on spending 7-10 thousand doing it.
