Re: Engine Ran With No Oil

I got the results back. On scale of 0 to 5, I was a 1. 0-1 is considered normal. Little or nothing in ppm wear metals; slight trace of iron, that was it. Slight water trace due to cold when sample taken, that put me on #1 scale. I'll have it done again in late spring 2009

Not sure why you are testing again in the spring. It came back in the normal range. Celebrate, relax and quit worrying about it. Glad it worked out for you.

Thanks! Good question. There is not a lot of run time on the new oil. I just ran it about 45 mintutes a 1500-2000 RPM's with hose and muffs, not exactly under a load. They recomend that you wait a little bit after you have changed the oil before drawing sample for testing. But you are right, its most likely OK. For another $28 I can live with that.

I copied this off of another company's website who does the oil analysis:

"What if the oil was just changed? Oil analysis can best find problems in oil that has been in use for 1000 miles or more. If the owner of the vehicle has just changed the oil, the engine may look like it's in good condition, even if problems exist. Major issues (like antifreeze) may still show up, but a more insidious problem like a part that's slowly going bad may not show up."

Thats why a used boat is a blessing, with something expensive and new every little scratch you have a coronary.

Was out in the middle of the bay and my friend pulls up with a mush larger boat and puts a scratch on mine i didn't even notice, so many on it already, one more who cares.

New cars also same thing.

Don't worry be happy, bet theres alot of other things in your life you need to worry about other then the boat.

Good luck !

Here it is almost 6 months later. I ran the boat nearly 4 hours over the weekend. Runs lasting up to an hour at a time. Oil pressure normal and no strange sounds. After I run the boat for about two more weekends I get another oil analysis sample sent out. I will post results again

I had the same oil analyzed once more. This time with about 50+ hours on it. The results came back as such: On a scale of 0-4 it was a zero! Normal !! the only wear metal that even came up was iron at 19 ppm :D

My guess is that you really weren't too worried about it. But if you are like me, and it sounds like you are, you were more curious from a test case standpoint.

I REALLY appreciate that you shared your tests and data with us. Now we have some good data on what may or may not happen when 'things happen'.

Have a great summer, and thanks for sharing!
