Engine rough then stalled, rough idle, weird noise from engine

OK, so I purchased the Sierra part # 18-2100 which replaces Merc # 60794A4 after checking the online Merc parts manual to confirm that Merc number fits my transom. Now, the Sierra unit is thicker in the center ring. See photo.

Anyone see this before?

Of course not sure if the gimbal I pulled out is Mercury or not, so maybe its an aftermarket thats too thin. I will try and track down a local Mercury part to compare that with the Sierra.

Don't bother. the sierra is fine. What does the coupler look like?

The coupler looked fine although it's still tough to see more than just the inner splines. '98 and newer have the triangle shaped coupling assembly which looks pretty beefy so I can't see how that would likely fail. Looking​ at the older style round cup like thing I can see how that could break down.

I'll go with the Sierra then. Reassemble and put this in the water and see if I can recreate my original issue. Hopefully the goats will be gone from the engine.
