I have had my 89 85hp force for some time and I am know that they smoke due to the gas/oil mixture and I was woundering if I can change the mixture to 40;1 to lower smoke and not do any damage.
50:1 is recommended. I wouldn't reduce. I use 50:1 on my 85 hp and don't smoke that much. You sure you're set up right? Fuel air mixture? Maybe you're adjusted too rich.
pull your plugs, and see if you got a clean one,if you do you got water in that cylinder, and that will cause it smoke, eccsessively, maybe a bad head gasket?
DON"T Or you'll be rebuilding.I have a Merc 225 EFI and it smokes like a bathroom at the local high school at lunch. When it gets running it eventually slows down but They are gonna smoke.
Nothing like the smell of a two stroke in the morning!!! J
Thanks for the replies. I just went on youtube and there was a 90hp force almost identical as mine it it smoked the same. Has anyone tried synthetic to reduce smoke?
i use synthetic 2 stroke oil and my boat smokes when first started and does not smoke at all the rest of the day ... its good and smooth ive noticed a big difference in drivability from switching from non syn to synthetic i also use 89 octane fuel which people tell me not to at all but its been great with no problems i did adjust the air/fuel out to 1 full turn from lightly seated
My1stboat1, do you still use 50;1 and what synthetic oil do you use? I think that is what I will do as well because the smoke is just annoying and it stinks as well. Why are they telling you not to use 89 octane?
I have been getting conflicting replies when asking about using synthetics to reduce smoke. I was thinking about trying a synthetic to find out for myself and recently purchased some Evinrude XD50. Hope to try it out soon after I burn up the tank of fuel mixed with Quicksilver I have now. I have an 1987 Force 125 that runs real good but does smoke a bit.
Ive been running it since ive owned the boat and it has dramatically made an impressive difference... As for the 89 octane people have said the higher the octane the leaner the mix would become, So because i havent had sufficent evidence of this i did adjust the air/fuel from 3/4 turn from where it was to 1 full turn out when i did that the engine idle came down due to the heavier mix i adjusted the idle back to 950 to 1000 rpms idling and 750 to 800 in gear and like i said it does smoke when cold but once warmed up No smoke whatsoever, Clean and smooth ... Mixture 50to1 with 89 octane..
I forgot to mention I mix all my fuel onland and then put in boat... I havent gone to a marine fuel station and added oil after fuels been added... IF my boat had a vro pump i would do that, But it has to be manually mixed so i buy gas onland and then go out for the day... i have a 35 gallon tank and im go a few trips out for hours at a time without worring about fuel
I will check the air/fuel mixture and will try syn oil this weekend and will post the results. I have fueled the boat on land as well and I would put in 1/4 oil then pump 1/4 fuel and so on, to ensure it gets mixed.
yeah its the screw on the inlet side of the carburetor at the top of the flange flat head screw. if you adjust it count the turns in slowly to a lightly seated position that way you have a fall back if it doesnt work well on your boat.. again i would put that fuel in first before making any adjustments at all
