2006 Mercruiser 3.0L with Alpha One Drive (in a Maxum 1800SR3).
(LONG STORY, skip to paragraph #2 for the short version).
Typically before every use, I top off with fuel (never been below a half tank). Last weekend I didn't. It was only used for 2 hours the previous weekend. I went on another 2 hour ride (rode perfectly) and when coming to the ramp, I couldn't keep her running. She would stumble to get to 2000 rpms and ran fine after that, until I brought it back down to idle. Once at idle, she sputtered and finally stalled. I waited a few seconds, fired her right up and babied her into port. I chalked it up to being gas sloshing around and not getting to the fuel pickup, no big deal. I gently placed her onto her weekly resting place (the trailer), took her home, bathed her and tucked her away until yesterday. I was ready to do some boating...but I knew that she was thirsty. She ended up taking 20 Gallons of some of our best overpriced fuel and we were off to the ramp. Launched her, and she fired right up (as she always does). Warmed her up, threw her into gear and we were no-waking our way to a beautiful day on the river....until it happend, I eased into the throttle and she stumbled to get to 2000 rpms. BUT, again once she got there she popped onto plane and we cruised to 27mph at 3500 rpms. After three or four minutes, I backed her down to 2000 rpms and then she started to sputter and eventually, stalled. I waited a moment, fired her back up and away we went...stumbling to 2000 rpms and then leveling off. After an hour ride, we pull back into the marina, stalled, fired her back up and eased into the dock eagerly awaiting her chariot.
(Enough with the drama already, here's the problem...)
She Starts normally and first idles normally. When I ease into the throttle, she stumbles until about 2000 rpms (i've got to give it full throttle to get her to go) and then she rides fine. We cruise between 3000-3500 rpms with NO LOSS OF POWER, until i bring her back down to idle...she sputter and shuts off. I wait a few seconds and she fires right back up and I can "no-wake" it for hours if I had to.
I've changed the fuel filter (in the fuel pump), I've changed the plugs. Non of which looked bad. She only has 80 hours on her. I Startron every other tank fill. Not until last weekend has she ever seen below a half a tank (only 7-8 gallons left out of 28). Not until last weekend have I had this problem. I need some advice. This behavior also happens when she is on muffs. I think it's fuel delivery maybe a vacuum issue somwhere...? ALSO, if someone can tell me how to get that friggin fuel pickup tube out of the gas tank I would really appreciate it.
As you can tell...she's my baby...be gentle
