I need some advice. Just purchased my first boat, and though it's fairly old, it seems to be in pretty good shape. Previous owner stated that he had been using the boat two years ago, winterized it, and then parked it in the shed. When I looked at the boat, it had been sitting outside for sale, uncovered, for a couple weeks and we have had nearly 10 inches of rain through here during this period. Pulled the engine cover and there is water on the manifold, and the air cleaner, though in place, has a broken carb stud and the hole is out of round so there is a small opening for water to get in.

The engine is stuck. I've pulled the plugs, which were moist but very clean, and shot a generous amount of Kroil into each cylinder to sit and soak. Oh, and the oil is full and clean with no evidence of water, and, there is antifreeze in the exhuast coolers/manifolds.

The question is, if this frees the motor and I lubricate and spin it without the plugs in, will it still be a dependable motor? I've done this with several other engines in the past in vehicles, and they seem to run fine.

compression test will give you some idea.

it could be the outdrive that is seized. remove it and retry turning the motor to see if you are even chasing the right demon

It's in my signature. Other forums I've been on for various things usually do this as well so it right there for them to see. Sorry I'm not familiar with this site and how you guys do things.

It is, however, a 1976 Tri-Sonic Vuntura SST/XLT with an OMC 235 Ford powered stern drive.

drain the oil and water from the pan before you fire it up, pull the spark plugs, spray (dump) some WD-40 in there and maybe some rust breaker, you may need to remove the head and tap the pistons with a mallet while turning the crank to free.. but can damage the piston rings.

Ya... so you make sound really easy, like checking the distributor or something (LOL), but how involved is that? I have yet to order the appropriate repair manual, soo...

And also, if I were to put the throttle into the forward position, would that not engage the prop through the drive to the motor? because the prop still spins when the throttle is forward. Is there a torque converter involved there?

Re: Engine Stuck

no torque converter
your drive is electric shift.

removing your outdrive takes about 10 minutes. there's only 12 bolts (and 8 are optional to remove really)and 2 wire connectors to deal with.
takes a bit longer if fasteners are seized. -patience and some penetrating oil

You need to replace the water pump impeller in the drive anyway, so time to start learning how to take it off :).

go to the Adults only thread at the top of this forum - the manual is in there.

Tried to download the manual, added the 4share program and registered to use, but I can't seem to figure out how to look at the file. Says it's all there but I can't get it to open. Help?

Re: Engine Stuck

Well, after sitting for 24 hours with Kroil penetrant in the cylinders, we put a large strap wrench onto the main pulley and it wouldn't budge. What else can I do? Pull the heads? Complete rebuild? How can I unstick this thing???

Re: Engine Stuck

Well i found a good used engine from a 75 Maverick. The idea is to swap everything onto my new (used) short block and go boating. I'm going to ream the ridges, hone the cylinders, and install new rings and bearings. But I think, since I am unsure about why my old motor is stuck, I would take it apart as well, and as long as it's only stuck because of moisture then why not do the same thing to it, right?
