i have asked around and never got a straight answer...so maybe yall can help...i have a 92 chaparral 18.6 ssi with a merc 3.0 alpha 1 gen 2 out. i also have a fully built 89 5.0 mustang engine. and would love to put it in my boat...however dont know if thats possible....i know the engine mounts are different but ? more so on if the outdrive would have to be changed and is this something that would be more trouble than its worth ???

Re: engine swap ???

doubtful on the bellhousing or Y pipe to late model Alpha,Alpha will need the gears changed.
Better off with the GM line of engines. The V motors will need engine bed stringers glassed in.

Re: engine swap ???

thanks for the reply....i know its a far fetched project....i just know how that engine runs in the car and could only imagine the performance on the water...i guess ill have to save it for a jet boat project or something down the road

me too: mediocre

302 is "ok" in a boat, sort of V6 performance with V8 weight

budget for the swap:
exhaust manifolds and risers/y pipe: $1500
fuel system, carb, marine cam and intake:$2000
marine ignition and alt/starter: $600
misc new or used parts like bellhousing, coupler, flywheel, linkages, flame arrester, brackets +welding and fab of engine mounts: $1000
outdrive regearing: $1000

depending on what you find used, $5000 to $8000 and then you call your insurance and they say "a bigger engine?? we would need a marine survey done before we can insure that"

He said "built" 302, not stock

all engines are built

this one was built for a lightweight car.

i.e. to make power over 5000 rpm.

could be worse than a stock marine 302 in a boat (that made about 190HP at outdrive worthy rpm's)
302's are not known for gobs of low end torque

Bell housing is not a big deal. You can practically put any bell housing on any engine these days. Heres a kit that can put a SBC Mercruiser Cover on a SBF.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TCI-529600/

Will just need a Flywheel drilled to accept Mercruiser coupler and a new drive shaft made thats an inch longer. It will sit the motor forward an inch but you need to make motor mounts anyways.

Y-pipe? Who needs em? Through hall exhaust with closed cooling.

Theres a couple of mods that you needed, only about 75 more to go. But it can be done...
