Engine Swap

Hey guys,

Going to be starting an engine swap soon. Bought a boat by accident with a bad floor thinking I could fix, turned out everything was rotted. But, has a brand new 350 (5.7) swap from 305 (5.0) in it. So, after finding out that the whole boat is a bust, bought another one with a good hull, but doesn't run. The new one has 5.0 EFI in it.

I will be swapping the 5.7 in place of the 5.0 EFI that doesn't run. It seems like a pretty straight forward swap as it was done in the first boat I bought. Pull outdrive, disconnect everything from motor, pull, replace and reconnect, align, and replace outdrive. Also planned on using the drive from the 350 as it is in better shape. The 350 has the straight transom dump exhaust. Thinking about maybe using that too as I enjoy the sound.

What I'm wondering is are there any good "while you're in there" things to replace while the motor is out? Already planned on the oil filter relocation, but not sure of anything else.

Check/test and maybe replace the bilge pump
Maybe the trim sensors
Inspect the Y-pipe, Engine coupler, gimbal bearing, top steering pin, lower shift cable

Sounds like you are able to turn this project for the good. Wish I had done the remote filter when I repowered...

Would agree on bellows and trim sensors if they look old. Would look at starter while in there. Fuel lines depending on age of the boat.

Good time to do gimbal and water pump as well.

Oil pan may need repainting or replacement if there is corrosion

On the thru hull exhaust - you see a lot of comments on here that if it is thru hull only that can get old real fast. Captains call seems like best choice ...$$$

Ah yes, forgot to mention about the trim sensors. They will be replaced as the wires are worn through.

Starter is brand new as I thought that was the issue before, turns out it was the solenoid.

Seems like this may be as straight forward as I was hoping.

The engine coupler is attached to the flywheel LINK can be either item 4 or 9

Look at the splines inside the coupler to make sure the teeth are square and not rounded. The outdrive drive shaft goes into the coupler

How do I check the shift cable?
In most cases I would just replace it unless you know it's not very old. If it's worn you can hold tight one end so it doesn't move, then try to push in/out the other. There should be no play. If there is any play then the inside of the jacket is worn

Ayuh,........ Is the 350 carbed,..??

The Efi from the 5.0 won't run right on the 350,....

First thing to do after removing the old drive/ engine is to fully check the transom and stringers. If they are fine, clean and paint the bilges.
Surprised it hasn’t been suggested already.

I checked it out when I bought the boat. Sounds solid. Any other way to check them other than by ear? I suppose I could do core samples.

you mean you banged on it with a hammer? wont sound hollow for a good decade after the wet rotten wood completely dissolves , then dries out or is eaten by insects in order to leave a void.

assume any boat hull over 15 years old to have issues until proven otherwise.

Alright so it's been a bit since there was an update.

Since the last post, I got the motor out of the good hull. Started to rebuild the gimble housing, and realized I'm better off just swapping the entire transom mount as the one that's on the 350 is so much cleaner, and I can't get the gimble bearing out. Cleaned the bilge a bit. It's going along, just slower than I had hoped.

Here's some pics of the stuck gimble bearing, good outdrive and transom mount, as well as a pic of the motor out. Progress!

Did you ever try to drill the transom?
Also, knocking the gimbal bearing out from the engine side is way easier than trying to pull it.

Yeah I was trying to knock it out form the motor side and it wouldn’t budge. But now that I just got the transom mount out of it. Found transom rot….

And this was on the 'good' hull?
Yup... "good"

After just a day with the transom mount off it's already pretty dry and a lot more solid. I know it's not the correct way, but I'm gonna patch it up with some resin and throw it back together. I don't plan on keeping it forever, just needs to last a summer before I offload it.

Drill some holes to see the extent of it, might also be in the stingers as well. might be localized and somewhat easy to repair vs total gut.

Would hope one doesnt off load a known structurally unsound boat as you surely can attest to what that is like on the receiving end
