I would suspect you have a loose wire or corroded terminals. You should be able to turn off the key and the motor the will stop. When you take it apart, there will be 3-4 wires on the back of the key. Try removing one at a time, then clean and reattach.

The kill switch is really an emergency switch. That is probably dirty too. You really should fix both. The key switch is important because you apparently have a continuous open circuit which could drain you battery over time.

Also, the kill switch is protected by a pronged device which is usually connected to some plastic expandable cord that you attach to your body somewhere. It functions by pulling the pronged out and then the spring loaded kill switch pops out. To re-engage it, you push the button back in and re-insert the prong. Maybe you were trying to activate the kill switch incorrectly.

The boat is a 1974 model, and i would assume the remote is original. I know what you are talking about but this boat doesnt have that. I believe this safety feature either was made after 1974 OR this model was not so equipped. The parts diagram shows the cut-off button is on the side of the remote adjacent to the key. I opened the remote housing everything was clean and tight on both the ignition and the cut-off. My question is how exacty does the kill switch work and were can i find a wiring diagram without a repair manual(which i dont have yet). Thanks again

Most of the time and I say most cause the newer ones are different, one black wire from the kill goes to ground and the other goes to the coils or the powerpack.
