Engine won't start

I have a 1971 55HP Chrysler. Model 557HC serial 3188. It was running. The problem was the tower was sticking. And the fuel pump sediment bowl was dirty. I changed the diaphragm, and the gasket. I also changed the fuel sediment bowl gasket, and cleaned as well with WD-40. I removed the fly wheel and cleaned underneath. I put alittle grease around the breaker plate and cleaned also. All this solved the dirty fuel pump and the tower no longer sticks. I put back together. I tried to start (Now it was running prior to all this) I spray fuel in carb. several times. It would not start. When I checked for spark I noticed the lower plug wire just fell off the coil. I put it back in good. I tried to start again. Sprayed more fuel in carb. Still would not start. I noticed that when I turned the key you could see fuel spitting out of mouth of carb. Put finger in side and very wet. I am hoping I just flooded it, by spraying all that fuel in carb. It did back fire loudly twice. The battery is now dead and on charger. Do you think it's just flooded? What else could be the problem? Go ahead Frank, say it. (LOL)

You are trying your damnedest to get me to say it but I will not rise to the bait!

If you have any question about the carb, disconnect and plug the fuel line. Then remove the plugs and put about 1/2 to 1 teaspoonfull of fuel mix directly into the cylinders. Replace the plugs and try to start it. It should crank and gradually clear itself, then start and run for one or two seconds until it runs out of fuel. If it acts like this, yes, it was flooded and you should check the inlet needle of the carb again to be sure it is not stuck open. Also check the float level again the be sure it is not too high.

Hi Frank, I removed the plug and put 3/4 teaspon of gas/oil mix. I tried to start and it back fired. Did not start. Just turned over and over. Almost as if it was out of gas. I attached fuel line and still it did not start. I put finger in carb and it was very wet. What next? Also Can I reuse cab gasket. The one that attaches carb to motor?
UPDATE: I removed carb and it was filled with gas. Half cup of gas. At least. I Will install tomorrow and see what happens. But if it was flooded. Should it have started when I put fuel directly in head? Seems to me it should. Could there be something else wrong?

Re: Engine won't start

You have either sheared the flywheel key or (more likely) put the plug wires on the wrong plug.

Noah,

Have you verified you have spark at the plugs since you put it back together? Is it a strong blue spark? Do you have a voltmeter? If so, put it on the battery and see what it goes down to during cranking. You may not be getting enough voltage or the starter could be dragging.

Just guessing.

Plenty of spark. Battery new and turns starter strong. Please read thread on carb/fuel
