Re: epoxy fiberglass resin or stright fiberglass resin

Epoxy w/ epoxy specific fiberglass cloths (must be protected from UV w/ paint or spar)

Epoxy (must be protected from UV w/ paint or spar)

Vinylester Resin & VE specific fiberglass cloth (must be protected from UV w/ paint or spar)

Polyester Resin w/ poly specific fiberglass cloth (CSM, 1708) (must be protected from UV w/ paint or spar)

Porch paint ~ Spar varnish ~ Spar urethane ~ Rustoleum ~ Majic (tractor supply brand paint that replaced Valspar Farm & Implement paint)

In order of expense and strength/longevity. Up to you. All require various degrees of upkeep & maintenance. Epoxy will be longest lasting & strongest. But will cure slower then poly resin. Poly resin is less water-proof then epoxy. Porch paint & the others will be very readily available, easy to use, and dry reasonable fast, but will require more frequent re-application.

Help?

Re: epoxy fiberglass resin or stright fiberglass resin

I just replaced my floor in my boat, I cut out the old floor, put down a new 5/8 wood decking, predrilled and screwed. I just used the 3M Fiberglass resin you can buy at Lowes and some fiberglass netting. I filled the crack between the wood seams with straight resin, then put down a layer of net, and then brushed on a coat of fiberglass resin over the whole floor, let it dry, next day I sanded lightly, applyed a heavy coat of resin (2nd) over the whole thing again, but this time i used a flat pc of plastic and spead a heavy coat over the whole floor and let it dry. came back and put down carpet with a water proof glue. seems to be pretty good! :D

Ummm, in an aluminum boat? Or a fiberglass boat? The deck the OP is asking about is in a tin Starcraft.

Fiberglass resin between the seams, unthickened, may not be long lived. Polyester resin should be applied to the wood surface, then lay the fiberglass cloth, then apply resin to wet out the fiberglass cloth. I am not familiar w/ the fiberglass netting you're referring to...

EDIT:
Sorry, forgot:

NEVER polyester resin w/out cloth. EVER.... Becomes brittle & cracks....

Kracker - may I suggest you start a restoration thread and try to keep all your questions lumped together there? It's very helpful for the members to see where you have been, where you are going and what has been kicked around already.

Cheers

Sure you do:

Your resto thread
;)

Just like the conversation about your dads demo work & etc, you can post the noodle & deck coating questions there.

Re: epoxy fiberglass resin or stright fiberglass resin

Just PM ezmobee or any of the moderators & ask them to combine the noodle, deck & 2 free resto threads into 1 of the freebie 1966 resto threads.

Earlier I meant that your free 1966 resto thread w/ your dad's demo pix would have been a good place to consolidate everything.

But the new free bee 1966 Starchief resto thread would be a good place too.....

But before you ask for them to be consolidated, you might check the title's spelling & change it to Starchief  A mod could do that too, if that's the 1 you want to be your primary resto thread.

Have a great weekend...
